After we weakened our already-weak public health system by firing the National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense in 2018, we flew blind into a domestic-origin Cover-19 outbreak in August 2019. (We know that politicians can thwart health alerts: China, on hair-trigger alert, actively looking for such an outbreak, with much better public health, took 2-3 weeks to wake up to it because local politicians worried that an outbreak might reflect on their competence. (Beijing has since rejigged things so that politicians cannot interfere with their CDC).

Here in the US, by the time someone raised the alarm (October-November?) it was too late, so the White House decided to let it get lost in the annual ‘flu death toll and even forbade Covid-19 testing from January 1 to March 1.

Perhaps the White House had decided to wait until it spread to another country then blame that country, as it blamed Mexico for H1N1 (after failing to detect it domestically for 6 months). That would explain why we refuse to answer these questions:

Why did the President fire the entire US Pandemic Response Team in May, 2018? “When President Trump took office in 2017, the White House’s National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense survived the transition intact. 3. On March 11, 2020, why did CDC Director Robert Redfield not reveal the dates or locations of Americans whom he said were diagnosed as dying from influenza but later tested posthumously as positive for Covid-19?

4. Why will our CDC not reveal when was patient zero was detected in the US? Finding patient zero allows us to determine the time of initial infection and then to estimate the scope of transmission and scale of the epidemic. It also helps find the intermediate host: the animals that patient zero had contact with. The first thing China’s CDC told us was, “Patient zero appears to be associated with the Wuhan wet market in early- to mid-December.�

5. Why will our CDC not reveal the earliest positive test result confirmed by a tissue sample? Epidemiologists, pathologists and public health authorities need this basic information.

6. Why will our CDC not reveal the names of the US hospitals where they were first detected? Location, location, location!

7. Why were US health authorities forbidden to test for Covid-19 until March after WHO issued a Coronavirus Alert on January 1?

8. Why are tests still so few? Tiny South Korea tests more people in one day than we test in a month. Why?

9. How many people are currently infected in the US? It has been almost three months since we learned of Covid-19 yet we have no idea how many of us are infected??

Major national media had been carrying investigative reports of irregularities in an allegation that Shaanxi Provincial government had pleaded with the Supreme Court for a favorable ruling in its long-running case against the owner of a billion-dollar coal mine–an illicit interference in a legal procedure. The story was too technical to capture popular imagination until Cui published an expletive-laden Weibo post demanding to know why case files on the disputed mine were missing and accusing the President of the Supreme Court of malfeasance. Surprisingly, when journalists impinge on national security, the consequences are relatively mild. The government funded the monthly journal, China Through the Ages, for thirty years and a hundred thousand subscribers enjoyed its blunt criticisms of ‘the Party’s self-serving narrative about the Cultural Revolution,’ and its advocacy of constitutional, multi-party democracy and privatization of state assets. Beijing finally lost patience and cancelled its subsidy after the journal praised Zhao Ziyang, the Cabinet Minister who collaborated with the CIA during the Tiananmen demonstrations but, even then, the editor went down fighting, “This magazine will stop publication due to policy changes reflecting the establishment’s intolerance of reformers and liberals.� Imagine the US Government funding America Through the Ages for thirty years as it advocated one-party rule, workers’ ownership of the means of production and the abolition of competitive, multi-party elections.

The Chinese, like the Singaporeans, expect government to provide sober, accurate, verifiable and balanced information. Compared to earnest reports on crop yields, consumer laws and artificial intelligence, the New York Times’ reports of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction and the President’s Russian connection seems scandalous to Chinese readers.

Temple University Professor Deborah A. Cai[4] says, “Chinese reporting on the US appears to be relatively balanced overall. Extreme negative tones toward the US are rare and appear mostly during periods of overt Sino-US confrontation, such as the reconnaissance plane incident or, more recently, following America’s decisions to raise steel import tariffs or conduct unilateral actions in the Middle East.�

Far from being a spontaneous event, the construction of those emergency wards was a carefully planned and coordinated demonstration of state competence, and a warning to nefarious actors who might be tempted to use bioweapons on China.

Commercial banks create money when they create loans. When they create, say, a mortgage loan they don’t take money out of their own pocket and put it in the borrowers hand. Neither do they take the money of depositors and place it in the borrowers hand. They simply write the amount into the borrower’s account. That is money that did not exist that the borrower can now spend.

The borrower uses the money to buy a house, and if it’s a new house, that money goes out to the builders, the workers, suppliers sub-trades, etc. That’s real money that did not previously exist that gets spent on food, clothes, cars, etc.

Sure, if the bank is to expand it’s loan portfolio year after year thereby contributing to an ongoing increase in national money supply, it must increase its reserves. But only at the rate of one dollar for ever twelve or so dollars of loans, and that it can do by retaining a share of profits over and above what are paid out to shareholders.

Yes, the Federal Reserve can and does print money, usually to cover government budget deficits, although conservatives disapprove of this, hence the call for balanced budgets. But most money creation occurs in the private banking sector, not with the central bank. Only when the commercial banks screw up, as in 2008, does the Fed step in and print masses of money to bail out the commercial banks. But note that, after 2008, the 17 trillion or whatever it was that the US Fed printed and distributed as emergency loans to save the banks was all repaid, and thereby returned to the vacuum whence it came.

Italy currently has a higher death rate (4.2%) than South Korea (0.5%), but it’s been pointed out that Italy has a demographic oddity. 7.5% of their population is over 80 years of age. In South Korea, the same age group is only 3.6% of the population. A study from China says the death rate over 80 years of age is 14%. Italy may get 630K deaths from the over 80 age bracket. Once Covid-19 gets into a nursing home, it’s going to wipe out a lot of those people quickly. Nursing homes usually have that portion of the over-80 population that’s feeble and going downhill in health, not the healthier 80s+ in retirement communities or living independently.

Any country with an elderly population isn’t going to do well with Covid-19, mainly because of demographics. I expect Africa to do well.
