Thank you for this reminder about an important, bigger picture. It reminded me of C. J. Hopkins’ series of essays, beginning here at TUR, on the inherently voracious nature of what he calls GloboCap and Glenn Greenwald’s books years ago pointing out how important privacy is in ameliorating the conformity of an increasingly centralized society built on and managed with information technology.

I’d read of Kent before. As a U.S. citizen and U.S. government employee, his imprisonment under Britain’s Official Secrets Act had no legal validity.

The Official Secrets Act isn’t arbitrary like the U.S. Espionage Act.

If a person goes into certain jobs, in the military (any, at least for officers), intelligence (any), bureaucracy (if having access to state secrets), or military R&D (any), the person has to sign an agreement to be subject to the act as a requirement of the job.
