車でテキサスへ向かう母子だったが途中で車がパンクしてしまう。そこはアメリカ女、自分でタイヤ交換に乗り出すがそのへんをうろうろしてた娘はガラガラヘビに噛まれて重体に。慌てて娘を抱えて走り回るとトレーラーハウスを発見し、そこの老婆に娘を預け、自身は車を急いで修理し病院を目指すことに。老婆から「代金は後払いで」と言われ、適当に流して車の修理に向かいタイヤ交換を終え娘を迎えに行くと老婆はおらず娘からはヘビの噛み跡が消えていた。そして病院で診察を受けるも容態は安定。そこに謎の黒人が現れ「ほな代金いただきます。日暮れまでに誰か別人の魂を捧げろ。じゃないとやっぱ娘死ぬ」と言われ証拠も見せられる。果たして主人公は娘のために他人の命を捧げることができるのか。
みたいな話。
う～ん。
ある種のミステリとして100回見た展開ではある。例えばちょっと前に見た「DROP」も、娘を人質にとられて知らんやつから娘を生かしてほしかったらデート相手を殺せって指令が来る話だったし。それを今作ではスーパーナチュラルな相手から指令が来るという形になっている。
その結果として定期的に取立人がいろんな方法でやってきて、例えば交差点で信号待ちしてるとガキが現れて窓を叩いてきて無視してると今度は頭を血まみれにしながら窓に頭突きを始めてぶち割ってくるとか、廃教会の前で黒衣の神父がフィンガーガン売ってくるやんと思ったら化学工場ばりに黒煙をモクモクあげながら炎上したりと、ホラー演出をねじ込むというエンタメ効果を補強しているのは、設定を活かせているという意味でヨシ。
一方で、こういう作品のキモであるはずの殺す殺さんの話はなんかかったるい。
取り立てが病院から始まるので偶々見かけた死にかけのジジイの家族に接触して病室に潜入。家族が目を離した隙に殺そうとするも、殺せない！ってなってトイレに逃げ込んだら家族が戻ってきてすぐにジジイは死亡。という、もう死ぬんやったら殺しとけばよかった～っていう皮肉な展開はちょっと面白かったけど、その葛藤も地味だしなんかタラタラしてる。
その後、バーでDV彼氏とその彼女に出会い、せやDV彼氏やったら殺してええやろ！ってなるのもナンカナーって感じだし、ガンショップに銃を買いに行くも地元民じゃないからダメって拒否されるも砂漠でレイプされた！ってでっち上げて近所の闇業者を紹介されて銃を買える展開もナンダカナーって感じ。
で、まんまとDV彼氏を誘拐し砂漠につれていくも逃げられ探すも見つからず途方に暮れた彼女は取り立てに来る悪魔に出会いもうダメだぁ、おしまいだぁとなってこの映画を見始めた人100人中96人が考えたであろう結論に達し娘にビデオメッセージを撮影する。はいはい、他人指定がないから結局自己犠牲で自殺するんでしょと思ってたらなぜか戻ってきたDV彼氏に石を投げられ気絶。そしてなぜか待っていたDV彼氏と再び対峙するも抜いたナイフで自分の首を切ろうとする主人公。フーンと思って見てると、なぜか再びガラガラヘビがやってきてDV彼氏の足をガブリアス。
崖から落下した瀕死のDV彼氏を見て主人公はこれ幸いと首を掻っ切り娘を迎えに行って街を脱出するのでした。
これ前に見たトジコメを思い出すんだよな。スーパーナチュラルの使い(そもそもヘビってのがモチーフ的だし)によって試練が与えられ、その試練の究極の自己犠牲という解答にたどり着けたのでスーパーナチュラルから許されてDV彼氏を殺す権利をもらえた的な。結局、結論として臓器くじじゃないけど功利主義的に自己犠牲の精神を見せたから死にかけのDV彼氏を殺したらええやんというのは本当に正しいのか。
もろちん、このDV彼氏の足にガラガラヘビが噛みつくところまでが実は最終試練でここで「殺す」「自殺する」のどちらを選ぶのかで真の倫理観が試されているという捉え方もできなくはないけど崖から大落下してさらにガラガラヘビにも噛まれているっていう、主人公が自殺したところでこいつも死ぬだけやんって状況だったら、倫理もクソも合理的に考えてこいつを殺すのが正しいってなっちゃうじゃん？
母性による究極の自己犠牲の果てに結局他人を殺して自分も娘も助かりました！相手はDV男だしいいよね！
ほんまにか？
まぁ最後の最後に車で走ってると娘が殺したはずのDV彼氏を見つけてヒッチハイクしてるオッサンおるなぁって言い出して、つまりどういうこと？ってなる、本当にあの決断で解放されたのかというあいまいさを残すエンドになってるけど、残されたところでじゃあどうすればよかったんっていう。さっさと死んどけばよかったんか？
まぁそんな感じかな。
主演の黒人女性が自身もプロデューサーとして噛んでるみたいな話も合って、そういう作品ってだいたい何らかのエンパワーメントを推進しているところがあって、この作品も母子のシングルマザーでDV彼氏に対して並々ならぬ怒りを持っていたり、DVサレ彼女に強い感情移入をしていることから、もしかしたら主人公自身がその被害者だった可能性を示唆していて、DV野郎は死ね！という強い思いがあったのかもしれないけど、それが作品のジャンルの面白さにうまく反映されていたかは謎。80分しかないのにめっちゃ長く感じた。あんまオススメじゃないかも。

夫を亡くしたシングルマザーの主人公はそうは言うてもなぁという感じでマッチングアプリで3か月やり取りをした男性と初デート。妹に息子の世話を任せ高層ビルの上の方にある高級レストランに向かう。なんか感じよさそうな男性と話していると急にスマホにドロップメッセージが。よく見るとそれは主人公の家で、覆面の男が銃を持って侵入するところだった。そしてその相手から次々とメッセージで指示が届くようになる。それに従いながら犯人捜しを行う主人公。そしてメッセージはマチアプで出会った相手の殺害を求めてきた。いったい私、どうなっちゃうの～！？
というようなお話。
いや、おおむねよくできた映画ではあるんだよ。
いわゆるソリッドシチュエーションスリラー、サスペンスに分類される映画で「高層ビルの高級レストランの中で犯人からの指令をこなしながら犯人探しもする」という内容で、そのハラハラとして子供が（実質）人質に取られている。めちゃくちゃウザいウエイターや、謎のナンパ男、同じくマチアプで失敗した老カップルといった一癖ある登場人物がそこに絡んできて怪しいのはどいつだ、こいつを利用してこの窮地を乗り越えられないかとこっちもいろいろ考えながら見られてその体験は楽しい。
ドロップメッセージが来た時点でスマホはクローン化されており自分のスマホからは通報ができないし、指示の内容からどうやら犯人もレストラン内にいるようで他人のスマホを借りて通報するのも難しい。見られたら子供が殺されてしまうかもしれない。と、こっちがあーすればええやん、こーすればええやんと思うことは主人公も試してみるしそれに対する答えも用意してくれている。
ここまではめっちゃよかったんだけどさぁ。
で、ネタバレするんだけど、犯人の目的は最初からマチアプの相手で実はそいつは犯人グループのスキャンダルを握っててこの後それをチクりにいく予定だったのでその前に殺したろｗってなって、主人公を利用することにしたという話になってくる。まぁ、悠長な話だし、こんな素人女にやらせて失敗する確率高すぎやろみたいな部分はまぁ置いておいて、レストラン内にいた犯人と対峙し、話を聞き、意を決した主人公はマチアプ男性に毒の入ったウォッカを飲ませる。
と見せかけて、犯人のデザートに毒を盛る。ここ、犯人も毒を飲んでいる(と見せかけられている)ターゲットを見ていたので手元がお留守になっていたという描写が入っているのも、ちゃんと細かくてよい。のだが、その後、主人公はドヤ顔でその種明かしをし、犯人はブチ切れて銃を懐から取り出してターゲットと主人公を撃ち、逃げ惑う主人公、追いかける犯人。最後に犯人の銃撃でひび割れた窓ガラスを主人公が機転を利かせてぶち割って気圧差で犯人は落下、一緒に落ちかけた主人公をすんでのところでマチアプ男性が救うのだった。という大見せ場1がある。
でもさぁ、これ結局、主人公が犯人を上回って毒を犯人に飲ませました、という反撃カタルシスがなくなっちゃってるよね。べつに毒飲ませなくてもその場で真実を暴くだけでも同じ展開になった。
そしてそこから主人公は家に向かって今度は家の中の襲撃犯VS妹→襲撃犯VS主人公のアクションパートになる。
これも、元々のソリッドシチュエーションサスペンスの文脈から浮いてる。犯人が分かる前まではかなり抑えたトーンのガチサスペンススリラーやってたのに犯人が分かってからはなんか急にこいつ雑になったな、予算余ったのか？ってなった。べつにそこまで含めてもっと静かなトーンでうまく知略を尽くしてやれんかったんか。
あと、冒頭、血まみれの主人公が謎の男に向けて銃を構えて「撃てよ！」と脅されるシーンから始まってカットが切り替わって現在になるので、犯人との死闘の末そうなるのかと思って見てたら、実はそれは元旦那で薬チュウで頭がおかしくなってて子供を撃とうとしていた、それを守るためだったんだけど結局主人公は撃たず、旦那はそのまま自殺しちゃったという話だったのがわかるんだけども、家に侵入していた襲撃犯との最後で主人公は襲撃犯に向けて同じように銃を構えて今度は撃つ。
これってさぁ、なんか対応関係になってる？この話の展開だったら「撃たなかったことで救えなかったが今度は救えた」という話になるべきだと思うんだけど、話的には「撃たなかったけど手を汚さずに救えたけど、今度は撃って手を汚して救えた」になってて、あんまうまくハマってないなって思った。むしろ悪くなってる。
まぁそんな感じかな。
少なくともメインの話の「高層レストランで犯人から脅迫されてミッションをこなしながら犯人探しをする」の部分は強度が高いのである程度の満足感はある。問題は、最後のドタバタを「サービス精神」とみるか「蛇足」とみるかだと思う。俺的にはなんかもうちょっと関精度高められたんじゃないかなという気持ち。まぁ、ソリッドシチュエーションサスペンス好きにはそこそこオススメ。

Appleは製品を売っているのではない。「理想の自己像」を売っている。これは完璧に設計されたマーケティング戦略の成果だ。
私たちはAppleという檻の中で、“自由”という幻想を消費している。
AppleのiPhone戦略は、「Proで羨望を創り、SEで妥協点を作る」階層構造にある。
Proモデルは“一度使うと戻れない”中毒性の体験を提供する。
対してSEは、廉価モデルの“安心感”を装いながら、実はProの神聖性を保つための緩衝材として存在している。
ゆえにいずれ物足りなさが不満に転じ、上位機種への渇望を生む。
しかもAppleは廉価グレードであるSEですら“型落ち”需要を狙った巧妙な罠を張っている。
最初は性能を抑え、価格も中途半端だが、時間が経ち型落ちモデルが姿を現す頃に“これでいいか”需要が生まれるよう設計されている「時限爆弾」なのだ。
気づけば複数のApple製品を揃えないと「Apple体験」は成立しない。この「ストレスのない世界」は、完璧な囲い込みの設計だ。
⌚️：Apple Watch：バンドに潜む“自尊心”のトリガー
Apple Watch自体よりも、着目すべきはバンドの持つ「自己表現」だ。
Amazonを探せば多種多様なデザインのバンドが販売されている。ユーザーは自分の趣向に合わせて着用できる。
しかもバンドはApple Watch専用。互換性を持たせないことで、“腕からの依存”すら設計しているのだ。
iPadシリーズは「安くてゴミ、高いがゴミ」という構造を持つ。
無印iPadは安価だが、RAMも少なく、Pencilは旧式。分割表示も不安定で、書く行為すらストレスになる。
Proモデルは高性能なM4チップ（MacBookと同じチップセット）と16GB RAMを備えながら、macOSには及ばない。つまり「オーバースペック」な高級品。
iPad AirやMiniは、汎用性の高いデバイスとして、また「サブスマホ」的な位置付けとしての「ちょうど良さ」を装うバランス型搾取。納得感で財布の紐を緩ませる設計だ。
Appleは体験の快適さを段階的に操作することで、自然と上位モデルへと導く。
Proで「憧れ」を植え込み、廉価版で「ストレス」を仕組み、サードパーティで「個性」を売る。
その結果、私たちは徐々にAppleを通じた生活スタイルそのものを選ぶようになる。
Appleはこれらを統合し、「縛られる」ことによって他社が追いつけない“なめらかな体験”を提供する。
その心地よさが、囲い込みと依存を強化していくのだ。
ストレスは、あって初めて気づくもの。Appleユーザーは気付かぬうちに搾取構造の渦中に巻き込まれようとしている。
例えば、クラウド業界ではAWSが圧倒的なシェアを誇り、その背後にはAI・GPUチップで覇権を握るNVIDIA、そして製造を担うTSMCがある。
TSMCは日本にApple専用ともいえる工場を建設し、SonyのCMOSセンサー（スマホカメラ）を製造している。
これはAppleが情報漏洩リスクを最小限に抑えるための“囲い込み”戦略の一環だ。
業界標準を握る者が、すべてを支配する。これを理解し実行している企業だけが、生き残る。
🧺：檻は、悪ではない
Appleの「檻」は、決して悪ではない。
例えば動画撮影における「望遠から広角レンズへの切り替え」は動きをつけられ、Air dropによってメンバーとすぐに情報共有ができる。
あるいはMacBookによるiPhone遠隔操作で、さらなる生産性向上にも貢献できよう。
それはまさに、クリエイティブな未来を生み出すための“舞台”でもある。

In 2011, my papa was laid off from a Whirlpool manufacturing plant, the kind that had for so long made America great. In the wake of the financial crisis, the C-suite had decided to offshore operations to Mexico.
The plant they shuttered was a 1.2 million sq ft manufacturing plant, and overnight, 1,000 people lost their jobs. Many of whom had been working there for decades.
My papa was 57 years old when he got laid off. He had worked at that very same plant for over 30 years, and snap just like that, it was all gone.

When I was a little girl, from as far back as I could remember, my papa woke up at 3:30 am and drove the 40 minutes to the plant from the rural 1,200-person town every single day. And for 30 years, he worked what were often 10-12 hour shifts with no complaints.
I grew up a Navy brat, so I didn’t get to see my grandparents except for a few months during the summer, but I remember my papa exerting the last drop of his energy so he could spend time with us going to the creek, building us a tree house, riding horses, and playing cowboys and Indians.
Every evening, starting from when I was in grade school, my papa and I would sit in the living room and watch the History Channel, Animal Planet, and Bill O’Reilly and hee-haw together about what the Democrats were doing, as much as an eight-year-old can.
My papa and my nana had been together since they graduated high school; they got married at barely 18 and had my mom less than a year later and my aunt soon after that.
They had a small homestead, owned most of what they had outright, and they were poor, but poor doesn’t have to mean that much when you can work the land.
My nana worked as the local school’s secretary, and my papa had good benefits with his manufacturing job. They only ever went out to eat on special occasions. McDonald’s was a birthday-only type of affair. They had a one-acre garden, a few head of cattle, would can fruits and vegetables at the end of every summer, and freeze chopped okra, blueberries, meat from wild hogs and venison in an old chest freezer in the workshop.

Despite never having been on a plane and seldom ever having been outside of Arkansas, they managed to put both my mom and aunt through college and graduate school without requiring them to incur even a dime of debt. This was the 1990s.

Growing up, neither of them had running water—they drew water from a well, washed up in a tin tub heated over a fire, and went to the restroom in an outhouse. They were both educated in a one-room schoolhouse and both came from families that relied on their farm’s livestock to feed themselves. People like my grandparents built this nation. They built this nation for their children.
But because the thing they sought to build wasn’t a stock portfolio or real estate portfolio, the preservation of their homes and communities was not something that Wall Street nor Washington saw as having enough value to be anything more than apathetic about blowing up.

I Traveled to 46 States in America This Summer. Here’s Why Trump Won.

A week after Democrats’ election loss, accusations have flown in every direction within their Party. Some fault President Joe Biden for an egoistic refusal to drop out of the race earlier. Some blame the Harris campaign for failing to serve key demographics and communicate a clear vision for the country. And some blame Americans, claiming that racism and sexism drove voters toward Trump.
These factors certainly exist, but we’re missing a larger piece of the picture.
Over the summer, I traveled to 46 states in the U.S., creating a YouTube series highlighting slices of life across the country. In conversations from my nearly three-month road trip, I spoke with Republicans who were certain that inflation is entirely Biden’s fault and Democrats who, despite their frustrations with corporate profits and desires for universal healthcare, hoped for a more moderate candidate. From supporters of all candidates, I heard a shocking amount of misinformation.
After combing through hundreds of hours of interview footage from swing state Trump voters, I am certain that, as much as other factors influenced the outcome of the election, our crumbling media landscape — which has caused a rift in our democracy — is most to blame.
In the postwar period, news was dominated by three main channels, and because of the Fairness Doctrine, each station reported the same stories and covered multiple sides of each issue. Viewers picked which channels they watched mainly based on their preferences for news anchors’ personalities. Of course, this model had its problems, but, at the end of the day, it meant that Americans worked with a shared set of facts.
A shared set of facts is not the world we live in today.
Throughout my interviews, conspiracy theories were rampant, and on at least five separate occasions across separate states, I was told that Bill Gates tampers with our food, adding plastic to our fruits and vegetables to make his medical investments more profitable.
In conversations with voters, neither side seemed able to name many specific policy issues they cared about; everyone just seemed to repeat the words of their favorite pundits, podcast hosts, and internet personalities.
Although this behavior is harmful, I don’t blame everyday Americans. Blame falls on the media that has ostracized, disillusioned, and misinformed them.

I first saw this trend with low-wage workers in West Virginia, who — despite falling inflation rates — have seen stagnated salaries and clear increases in food costs. Channels like Fox News bred anger and resentment for many of them.
Take July of this summer, for example, when for the first time in his presidency, prices actually fell under the Biden administration. Traditional media establishments rushed to celebrate this victory, with one article from CNN declaring, “The White House can finally cross out ‘inflation’ on its list of presidential liabilities.” However, outside these bubbles, I observed many Americans held a different view.

Was told "no foreigners" by a clinic
I just recently moved to a new area in Tokyo, I called a nearby clinic to make a reservation (in Japanese) and pretty quickly into the conversation, the receptionist asked if I could go somewhere else instead. When I asked why, she clearly and blatantly said "they don't take foreigners." I was shocked so I asked again just to make sure I heard right and again she said they don't take foreigners.
When I accused the clinic of discrimination they tried to deny it and claim that "it's difficult to communicate with foreigners," though I've never had that issue at any other Japanese speaking only clinic or hospital.
If this were just a bar or something I'd drop it, but the fact that a CLINIC can blatantly discriminate against patients seems insane to me. I'm not expecting much sadly, but is there anywhere I can report them?
I'm paranoid about just leaving bad reviews because I've seen a first hand case of someone getting sued over one.

I called a "patient voice" hotline for reporting these sort of things. I explained the situation and they said they would contact the clinic. They later updated me and said they were actually able to talk to the doctor, and he just doubled down and insisted they did nothing wrong because "communication with foreigners is difficult." After that they basically could not do anything else other than offer sympathy lol...

I also called this government hotline. First they tried to refer me back to the patient voice hotline. After I explained the results from patient voice, they said they are going to determine if it warrants an investigation, which would take 2-3 weeks. They also warned that the clinic is allowed to decline the investigation... so honestly I'm expecting nothing. But they said they would contact me again in 2-3 weeks.
