Hannah, my love.I have a cat and I named her Hannah. I wanted her name to be palindromic and also sound like some good Japanese word at the same time an easily recognized western name.
It was not long before I came up with Hannah. It sounds like a Japanese word for "flower" (well, it is also a homonym of "nose").
She was born in Belgium in 2019. Her real birthday is a bit hazy but it is with a few days from Sunday, April 26 2019. She is 4 years old now.
She does not like to be held for long time.
She is shy. She may easily scared of people she does not know. When I carry her in the sling bag around, she buries her head deep in the bag to avoid having any eye contact with people.
She is also strong. When I took her to the vet to have a shot and ID implant as she was only two months old, she did not even wince when she got two shots around her neck.
I watch many cat videos on YouTube. Some of them feature subtitles that are supposed to be spoken by cats. Typically one of those "meows" when the owners come home late (or later than normal hours). They (cats) utter a special kind of meows that easily recognized by their owners as "You are late. Where have you been?" expressing their displeased feelings.
This evening I came home a bit too late after work. When I enter and turned on the light, my Hannah meowed at me expressing her frustration. I understood that she meant exactly, "You are late. Where have you been?"

84 degrees Celsius = 183.2 degrees FahrenheitThe Conversion Formula is:
Fahrenheit (degrees) = (*** x 9)/5 + 32
*** Celsius (degrees)
For example,
1. Water Freezing point
0 degrees Celsius = 32 degrees Fahrenheit
2. Water boiling point
100 degrees Celsius = 212 degrees Fahrenheit
3. I don't know why minus 18 degrees C is 0 Fahrenheit.
(minus) - 18 degrees Celsius = 0 degrees Fahrenheit
4. Supposedly the human body temperature?
38 degrees Celsius = 0 degrees Fahrenheit
I have used Celsius (SI system) since I knew how to measure temperatures. It is easy for me to imagine how cold or hot it is as you can touch or feel the freezing water (ice) or steaming boiling water in our daily life.
It was then I began to live in Los Angeles area, USA about 30 years ago when I learned how to measure in Fahrenheit. My perception was (imagine that you live in the San Fernando Valley area) if the weather forecast said that the daytime high would be 40 deg. F, there would be a really hot and dry day ahead of me.
It never sank in me how hot boiling water was in Fahrenheit then. 212 was not an easy number to remember.
I am writing this on my Compaq 610 (Intel Core™2 Duo T5870) running Lubuntu 23.04.
For the moment, I am writing this on FeatherPad (a text editor) while monitoring the CPU temperatures with CPU-X and watching a YouTube video with FireFox.
The temperature gets really hot. It get as high as 84 degrees Celsius. It is around 183 degrees Fahrenheit. The CPU is busy with the tasks and running at between 70 to 100 %.
84 degrees Celsius = (84 x 9)/5 + 32 = (720 + 36)/5 + 32 = 756/5 + 32 = 151.2 + 32 = 183.2 degrees Fahrenheit
I noticed that decoding an H265 video on VLC is a much lighter job than decoding a YouTube video on FireFox.
This T5870 is said to be rated at TDP 35 W(att). I don't think this Compaq 610's chassis design is not so good. I guess the bottom enclosure needs more opening (air vents).
I want to drill some holes in the bottom cover directly over the CPU area. The air sucking vents (slits) are located over the RAM module and USB port and ExpressCard module area. For some reason the palm rest over the ExpressCard module area gets hot (or really warm) over the course of use. Why? Maybe the heatsink is not doing a good job sucking the heat from the CPU.

Haiku OS on Compaq Presario CQ56 (AMD N370)I have been using heavily this old Compaq 610 (Intel Core2 Duo T5870) running Lubuntu 23.04 lately. So I have not used Haiku OS recently.
I would like to use Haiku OS more but I find Lubuntu more stable and practical.
For a starter, the WiFi card driver (Atheros card) is not too stable or consistent. It sometimes fails to work. I can not count on it to work consistently. This is a big problem. How should I proceed?
How about putting the HDD that has Haiku OS on it into my Compaq 610? I already know it works well on it (Compaq 610). Is this a win-win situation? Not quite so. The graphic performance of AMD CQ56 is way better than Intel 610. This is the only down side of the 610.
If the WiFi card in Compaq 610 works well with Haiku OS, I will be happy to give Haiku OS a try.
I am seriously thinking of upgrading my 610. How about giving it an Intel Core2 Duo (T7800) to add 30 % of performance?
Now I am trying itI am writing this on my Compaq 610 using Haiku OS. I found it a bit discouraging to continue doing this.
First of all, for some reason the keyboard on it does not work at all. I am writing this from a USB connected keyboard.
Secondly, the sound does not work. I can play a video but no sound at all.
On the other hand, it is a bit encouraging to see the WiFi works.
So I think I am going to use this Compaq 610 with Lubuntu 23.04.

Streamlight UltraStinger No.2I already own one. The one that I own is not in bad condition. I mean it is in good condition. I see small scratches on the reflector bell but other than those, the finish (black anodized finish) is almost perfect. It works very well although the battery shows a sign of weakening.
Why did I bought yet another UltraStinger? Because its serial number was mysteriously appealing to me. It was a palindromic prime number like 11 or 131.
Then again, I did not need nnother UltraStinger at all. Why did I buy this? Because I was weak. I could not hold my desire to own an UltraStinger with a serial number that was a palindromic prime number. I failed to curb my craving.
Anakin Skywalker also admitted that he failed because he was weak and swore that he would not fail again.
Should I swear that I would not fail again?
The flashlight has been shipped and will be here around the end of August.
Capricorn One (1977)I have known this movie and wanted to watch it for a long time. I was surprised to see O.J.Simpson as one of the astronauts.
I was living in Santa Monica when he was arrested and subsequently tried in the court presided by Judge Lance Itoh. I was there.
I enjoyed the movie.

6,399, is it a prime?6,399 = 3 x 2,133 (and 2,133 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 79). I was driving home this evening and a short moment before getting home, a car was following me behind. I saw the license number and it was 6399. Was it a prime, I thought and only a brief moment later I knew it was not. It was easy to divide it by 3.
You see, the standard license number format in Luxembourg is LLNNNN. That is two digits alphabet letters followed by 4 numerals. For example, AA9999 COULD be a license plate number on a Police car as AA signifies cars belonging to the Luxembourg government.
There are license plates with only 4 numbers or 5 numbers, too. They are of old format license plates. Some of them have survived all these years (since the early days of motorization in Luxembourg) because their owners decided to keep them by paying extra fees (not too much).
You can get a customized license plate (as long as they are not taken by someone else or allowed - AA won't be allowed for private individuals, I guess) for fees. For example I decided to pay extra 50 Euro when I bought my Mazda MX-5 as I liked the number that I got for my Ford Ka. When I got my former Ford Ka, this number just came with it.
Is my license plate number without the alphabetical letters a prime? No, it is not unfortunately. It can be divided by 11. Sigh! It is 7711. 7,711 = 11 x 701. It is not a prime number.
I am not obsessed with prime numbers but I like prime numbers. They are certainly mysterious. They are useful (protecting the secret better than an Enigma machine). They are beautiful.
So I am torn. I want to get the Streamlight UltraStinger with a serial number that is a palindromic prime number on ebay. I already own an UltraStinger. Do I really need it just because it has a palindromic prime serial number?

Cinderella or just a workhorse?Who is Cinderella? She is nobody as she is a fictitious figure who appears in a kind of fairy tale. I mean, I want to use this name as a metaphor for someone or something that comes as an underdog but steals the show in the end.
In my case, Compaq 610 was a Cinderella. I got this piece of hardware because I just wanted an Intel version of Compaq Presario CQ56 but found this set (610 and CQ56) and decided to get them. I did not need 610 but it so happened that this 610 had 4 GB of RAM in it. I thought that this 4 GB would go into its eBay auction partner (CQ56).
This Compaq 610 turned out to be a real workhorse. I liked it because of its sturdy keyboard (alas it is not a US-layout keyboard). It is a 2009 model and its keyboard is old. Oldie but goodie! This keyboard has a deeper key stroke and stronger springs. I can type as quickly as I wish because its deeper key stroke and strong springs won't budge under pressure.
Now I like this beast and I would like to make it even better. I have to get a CPU cooling fan as the current one rattles sometimes. I want to buy a brand-new US layout keyboard (the only keyboard that makes sense at all) and would like to repair the seemingly broken TouchPad (and its button). I even fancy upgrading its CPU to Core2 Duo T7800 (2.6 GHz).
The current Core2 Duo T5870 (2.0 GHz / 65 nm process) is fast enough to play back H265 encoded videos and runs much cooler than AMD Athlon II (N370 45 nm process) found in Compaq Presario CQ56.
Theoretically, only on the paper but the speed bump should be as much as 30 % (2.6 / 2.0 = 1.3, that is 30 % more juice)!
Today (Sunday, August 13 2023) I disassembled this beast to check something. I wanted to know why;
1. its TouchPad is not responding and
2. its keyboard is not really fixed.
I checked the ZIP connector (TouchPad unit to the mainboard) and found it seemed to be OK. Upon assembly I made sure the two screws fixing the keyboard were properly tightened.
I could remedied the floating keyboard but concluded that the TouchPad did not revive. Maybe I should get a TouchPad unit off a used lower case.
Should I spend some dough to make this beast better?

Prime and palindromicA prime number is a natural number like 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on but that can be divided only by 1 and by itself.
For example, 2 is a prime number (and only the even number) because it can be divided only by 1 and 2 (itself) but nothing else.
3 is so. 5 and 7 are equally so. So basically all the prime numbers are odd numbers except for 2.
I am a fan of prime numbers. I always wanted to have a Streamlight Stinger or Streamlight Stingers with serial numbers that are prime numbers.
Currently I own two Stingers, one Stinger HP and one UltraStinger. Their serial numbers are not prime numbers, not any of them.
Stinger 1: # 1,593,844 (This is an even number, thus not a prime number)
Stinger 2: # 002,610 (ditto)
Stinger HP: #038,994 (ditto)
UltraStinger:# 354,145 (This is an odd number but it ends in 5)
For your reference:
1,593,844 = 2 x 2 x 7 x 56,923
2,610 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 x 29
38,994 = 2 x 3 x 67 x 97
354,145 = 5 x 11 x 47 x 137
As you can see crystal-clearly none of them are prime numbers. Even numbers are definitely not and the one ending in 5 can easily divided by 5.
After all, I did not name my cat "Hannah" for no reason. I meant it to be palindromic.
A PalindromeDo you know what a palindrome is, right? Very known examples are like "Madam. I'm Adam" or "A man, a plan, a canal Panama".
Number can be easily palindromic. Almost anything can be palindromic.
Can a long (many digits) number be palindromic? 111 is a prime number and palindromic at the same time. I want longer sequences.
So imagine how I felt when I found a Streamlight Stinger on eBay (in this case it was an UltraStinger # 093139) with a serial number, which turned out to be a prime number and palindromic. I was not ecstatic, I admit but I was excited none the less.
Should I buy this? The price the seller is asking is alright with me but the shipping charges from the United State of America is a little bit discouraging. On top of that, I already own an UltraStinger. Why should I get one more?
More fixingI have to repair the iPod Classic that I destroyed myself. It was an accident but it was my fault as I was not careful with the device.
I was going to upgrade the iPod Classic with an SD card or microSD card adapter that fits into the iPod Classic. I have already acquired other parts (other than the adapter aforementioned) like the cable set to replace the one that I destroyed and the new bigger (in capacity and size) battery.
I am going to buy this (micro)SD card adapter from China. It is going to cost a bit.
This is why I am a bit hesitating to get the UltraStinger above-mentioned. I have to save. I can not overspend.
A bubble must burst! It is inevitable. There was a time in Japan as I was just starting to work right after graduating from a University, a time when Japanese economy was on fire (so it seemed and so people felt). The stock market was keep rising, companies were making huge sales record and the prices of houses, resort hotels, lands and any other properties were rising. The salaries were rising and people thought the future was bright. I did not know what was happening back then. I was a naive new recruit an
Then the (economic) bubble burst. The stock prices fell to the ground and the companies, banks and others came down.
I think I had known the famous "real" fairy tale of the great Dutch "tulip bulb" bubble and everybody knows about it now.
A quick search "tulip bulb bubble" will give you the details of the tulip bulb bubble of 1637. It happened. According to Wikipedia, it is called "tulip mania (tulpenmanie in Dutch)".
https://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania
Dutch people at that time thought that tulip bulbs would be as valuable as a house or more. It turned out that they (the Dutch) were wrong and they (bulbs) were not so valuable after all.
History repeats itself. We can name other bubbles like subprime loan crisis (symbolized by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers) and others (the Great Depression).
We never learn. Well,
they have learned but we the people never learn. Who are
they? They know that we the people never learn so they manipulate us and make a huge profit out of us.
So now the Chinese economic bubble has burst (and we are just waiting for it to SHOW - Minsky moment) according to many people. It is going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest ever. The impact will be mega although we will survive it.
It only deepens the gap between the have and the have-not (the rich and the poor). There will be almost no middle-class people but there will be only the wealthy and the rest in the world.
I am now reading the Wikipedia entry of "The Great Depression". How it happened, how it showed and how it impacted the world. I have to be prepared for the next big wave.
I was wrong about Compaq 610I have written somewhere that my Compaq 610 could not shut itself down from Lubuntu 23.04. Since then until just moment ago I kept pushing the power button (on the panel over the keyboard that houses the WiFi activation/deactivation button and the power button) for about 5 seconds until the power indicator LED dies.
I was just lazy to hold down the power button and kept watching the YouTube video. I looked up after, say 1 minute, to realize that the power was down. "What the heck?" I could not believe it.
I had to power it up and power it off to see what really happened if I waited longer.
It (my Compaq 610) shut itself down after about 20 to 30 seconds (after the LCD screen went off). So I was wrong.

To buy nor not to buy (a broken Compaq 610 from the UK)I am watching at two items from the UK and the same seller. They are equally broken and details are unknown.
I don't know how they came to this seller but they are broken alright. They are basically broken in two pieces. The seller only posted some scanty photos but gave no details on what is left. I don't know if the HDD (or caddy), RAM modules, WiFi card or CPU is still left inside. So the prices that the seller is asking seem too much. I send an offer to the seller telling my feeling.
Offer Denied! As soon as I sent it, my offer was declined. I think it was an automatic message that was triggered by the offer price. I did not mean to underbid but the seller had thought this broken notebook PC held more value than I thought it had.
Alright, then. I will see what happens to it. Maybe someone will buy it. If these items get sold, it means that I was wrong.

Hannah is my cat's name. She is sweet. She is my cat. She is sleeping on my lap this moment. I am watching "Inception (2010)" and trying not to disturb her. I would like to know how much she weighs. I think she weighs somewhere around 4 kg to 4.5 kg.
Inception (2010)A film by Director Christopher Nolan.
It is another very complicated story movie that you really put you mind to it to understand the story.
I remember watching it for the first time a few years ago and I think I did not understand it or appreciated it fully.
Now (in 2023) I am trying to comprehend the movie. Let's see how I do!
The nastiness of the stories with dreams is that dreaming is a nasty business.
Most, if not all, people dream in thier sleep. I do and sometimes I realize that I am dreaming. Most of the time I don't realize that I am dreaming.
I don't specifically remember times or a time when I woke up to be in another dream. In other words, my dreams seem to have been always in a single depth.

SRT filesI was watching a movie, an old (not too old around 2014) on my PC with the subtitle on. It (the subtitle) bothered me too much as it keeps flashing. It seemed that it did not have enough time duration to show the lines on the screen. The show time expired before the playback software (VLC media player) could put the lines up on the screen in their entirety.
I sometimes edit the *****.srt files accompanying the movie. It seems to be a simple text file with lot of formatted numbers and the actual lines that the actors and actresses use. The formatted numbers are time frames. It goes like this.
1
00:01:00,123 --> 00:01:03,998
I will be back!
Help yourself!
2
00:01:10,998 --> 00:01;12,012
[suspenseful Music]
I figured (maybe I could search for the format definition somewhere in Wikipedia but I am lazy) that the first number (as 1 or 2 above) refers to the line number.
The following formatted numbers are time in the movie as in;
H:MM:SS, (milisecond?).
I am sure the first three sets refer to "hour", "minute" and "second" but I am not too sure the fourth set of numbers. It seems to refer to even smaller fraction of time than a second in one thousandth.
The second time frame after "-->" is the time to make the line(s) expire.
For those audibly challenged, some explanatory lines are added to tell what is audibly happening at the moment like noises, music or lyrics.
It happened before that I noticed some typos or misspelling and I opened up the SRT file and corrected the text for my own satisfaction.
This time the situation was total snafu. I examined the contents and noticed that the two time stamps squeezing the "-->" were too close to show the text below. I remedied the situation by expanding the time gaps but there were too many of those, nearly all of them.
So I gave up, gave up correcting the subtitle of this movie. Who made this SRT file!
Subtitle editing with Linux?Lubuntu 23.04 uses "Discover" as its default software downloading (installation) gateway. I found there;
1. Gaupol (With some user reviews)
2. Subtitle Editor (Abandoned? No user reviews)
3. Gnome Subtitle (No user reviews)
4. Aegisub (No user reviews)
5. Subtitld (No user reviews)
These software can help one create and edit srt files, I think.
General search on the Net seems to suggest that these days using AI to help one create subtitle text from movies. It certainly is a good use of AI. I don't aspire to become a subtitle making author in near future. I won't be an even remote match for the AIs available these days.

I am moving to a remote (from the capital city of Luxembourg) location I am soon moving to a remote location. I am taking my dear Hannah with me, of course.
Today, Saturday, I drove to the local Cactus Hoppi (home depot kind)
Compaq 610 is so comfortable!I am writing this on it and I feel very comfortable with it.
Reason is, its keyboard (even though it is not a US-layout but a UK-layout with smaller SHIFT keys and far RETURN key), the key stroke is deeper and the spring is more vibrant than the that of my other CQ56 or ones with newer thinner keyboards.
There are some minor issues with this otherwise wonderful 610.
1. it does not have a drive access indicator led for the main drive. It does have one for the builtin DVD drive, of course.
2. its CPU cooling fan is not so healthy. It sometimes makes a faint rattling sound.
3. its TouchPad is missing an eletrical conductive rubber piece and currently the entire TouchPad is not responsive (maybe the ZIF cable is loose?)
4. not a US-style keyboard (enough said)
5. its does not shut down completely from Lubuntu (Linux)
6. it costs dearly to procure (its maximum) 8 GB of RAM for it
7. its battery is dying (half the original capacity)
Even though its CPU (Core2 Duo T5870 65 nm) is a generation older than Pentium T4500 (45 nm process), it runs comparebly as well and in fact it runs still much cooler than AMD Athlon II N370 (45 nm).
I may invest in it buying a cooling fan, US keyboard and those conductive rubber piece. Maybe.
How long or well do we remember the plot of a movie?I have been wondering if I am losing it. I mean that I could be suffering from ageing and my brain is losing its faculties and keeps forgetting.
I don't know. I am not sure.
I watch movies on my PCs (play them back on them) and sometimes realize that I have seen them before at some point. Sometimes I knew that I had seen them before but could not tell what the stories were like at all.
Watching those movies (Oh, Lord! Mercy me!) most of the time makes me remember the fact that I had seen them or retrieve the scenes that I had seen.
For example I am now watching "Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (2018)" and reliving the experience that I had around 2019 or so.
I saw "Jurassic World Dominion (2022)" a while ago and at that time I did not remember anything about "Maisie Lockwood" character at all. In retrospect, I have seen this character a lot in its previous story (Fallen Kingdom). I have completely forgotten about this character when I saw "Dominion" a few years later. In fact I don't remember anything about the movie. How come? Why? How did it happen?
Some movies are deeply etched in my brain and hard to forget. Why?
Watching an easy watchable movie with relatively many plots or story lines seems to be hard to remember seeing it, I speculate.
An easy watching movie is good for passing time but it does not leave much impression, do you agree with this hypothesis?
You take it easy (relax) and let the events happening in the movie take your to the end. It is easy to watch it without interruption. In the end, you think you have enjoyed the movie but you will easily forget the plot.

4 GB of RAM and it is kickingCompaq 610 is kicking and does not want to rest (quite literally).
I don't find the phantom 2 pieces of 1 GB DDR2 SODIMM modules that would fit in this notebook computer so I grabbed the very 4 GB modules that originally came with this from the ebay seller in the United Kingdom. I wanted to test it if its performance improves.
It did. Before this operation opening the FireFox and using it was a pain as this software program is a RAM memory hog.
With 4 GB of RAM installed (at least temporalily) it kicks. It feels as if this old machine is as lively as its younger brother, my CQ56.
I also found out that this Compaq 610 does not have a BIOS setting feature that Compaq Presario CQ56 does. The CQ56 lets you choose if the owner wants to use the "F (function)" key-assigned functions with the use of extra key (small "fn" key next to "ctrl" or "Windows" key) or without. I want to use it without pressing the extra key.
Anyway, I have to use this "fn" key to use the "F" key-assigned functions such as darkening the screen, changing the speaker volume settings, taking the screenshots or calling the default web browser.
For example "f3" key has a pictogram "www" in a rectable on it. I figured that this would be the key to invoke the default web browser. It worked as I guessed it would!
Now I am reading the section where BIOS settings in the PDF maintenance manual.
"Computer Setup" is the term Compaq (HP) chose to describe it and at the begnning of the section it says that "Computer Setup is a preinstalled, ROM-based utility that can be used even when the operating system is not working or will not load".
This Computer Setup is very intricately made compared to that of CQ56. For example one can change the used language from English to these. Descriptions in (parentheses) are provided by me.
0. English (default?)
1. Deutsch (German)
2. Español (Spanish)
3. Italiano (Italian)
4. Français (French)
5. 日本語 (Japanese)
6. Português (Portuguese)
7. Dansk (Danish)
8. Suomi (Finnish)
9. Nederlands (Dutch)
10. Norsk (Norwegian)
11. Svenska (Swedish)
I was a bit surprised to see there was no Chinese option. Was this model not made and assembled there? Was it before the era when everything was made in China?
It also has built-in disk eraser called "Disk Sanitizer" to completely wipe out the data on the HDD in case the computer gets released from the duty and sold or recycled to prevent a possible data leak.
The PDF manual says like this but this was not enough.
To choose a menu or a menu item, use the arrow keys
To select an item, press enter
To close open dialog boxes and return to the main Computer Setup screen, press esc
To view navigation information, press f1
To change the language, press f2
Pressing "f1" when the Computer Setup is running, it gives additional but very crucial information about navigating through this program. This was the missing link that I could not figure out. The use of TAB key. To switch between "/" like between MM/DD/YYYY, I have to use the TAB key (Shift-TAB backward).
It is fan noise not fun noise! Its CPU cooling fan makes a subtle noise from time to time. Its cracking sound suggests the bearing (or some sort) is showing the sign of ageing. Should I get a replacement fan now before it gets extinct?
The keyboard was OKThe keyboard on it was OK. It works. It was just a glitch that it did not work at one time. The TouchPad is not talking to me yet.
Shutdown is not an optionI can not shut it down from Lubuntu. Its screen shuts down black alright but the LED lights (one Power, the other WiFi) above the keyboard are on and the CPU fan is still on afterwards. I have to press-hold the Power key (where Power LED is located) to completely shut it down.

Turn it on, Baby! Compaq 610 Resurrection Part IThe power adapter has arrived or I went to the ALIMA supermarket where the package was sent to upon my request.
The power adapter that I bought from Amazon Germany is a simple one. It comes with a whopping amazing 15 plugs that fit a wide variety of notebook PCs from various manufacturers including the Compaq 610.
I seem to have chosen the one that automatically changes the output voltage when plugged into the subject (notebook PC). I thought I had chosen the one with a manual voltage selector but I was mistaken.
The moment of truth has come! Is it OK? Does it work? Have I not mistakenly destroyed it while cleaning it inside out?
The moment I plugged it, the notebook started. I don't know why it did but it was like a premature ejaculation, right? Hahaha!
The BIOS password lock?Upon turning it on, I had several options of operation. ESP key or other F (function) keys to choose from.
The ESP key stops the booting process and the screen shows the F key options.
F9: Boot device control (manually specify which device to boot from)
F10: BIOS settings
Verdict: The BIOS password lock seemed to have been lifted if the ebay seller's description had been correct.
Haiku OS Beta 4The boot DVD-ROM successfully booted this Compaq 610 and I could use it. Both wired and wireless LAN devices were recognized by Haiku OS. I had only 1 GB of RAM inside. I had fun with it.
Lubuntu 23.04It is the best OS to run on it. I don't have Windows 7 or other versions of Windows nor am I interested in them.
I can test the status of the machine hoping that Linux's wide hardware support can help me see if the devices (WiFI card, Bluetooth card if equipped, SD card reader or ExpressCard slot) are working. I can run CPU-X to see the CPU temperature under a light load or heavy load.
The boot DVD-ROM failed. I don't know if it had anything to do with the scratchy DVD-ROM or ??
I then pull the HDD from one of the CQ56 notebook PCs and put it into 610. It successfully booted. Now I am in.
The performanceThe Core2 Duo T5870 (2 GHz) will be fast enough to decode H265 videos without any problems. After all, it has two cores, right?
Verdict: Up to my expectations. It is still OK with a flavor of lightweight Linux in 2023 (unless maybe you want to edit videos on it?).
The CPU temperaturesWhen I saw and dismantled it to clean its cooling system, I realized that it had a outward ventilation slits where CPU cooling radiator fins blow out the hot air but it had not much opening on the bottom. It had three ventilation slit areas but they are not much open much. One is located over the RAM module compartment. The second one, tiniest, is located just below the first one above-described. The third one, largest, is located on the edge of the lower bottom where the ExpressCard module is soldered on the other side of the mainboard.
These second and the third ones are a kind of surrounding the CPU heatsink. So I guess they are supposed to be sucking fresh air. Aren't they too small?
They made me want to drill holes on the bottom over the heatsink area.
Here are the screenshots to show the results.
(image 1: Core2 Duo T5870 under a light load cruising at around 43 degrees Celsius)
(image 2 and 3: Core2 Duo T5870 under a moderate load playing back an H264 video at around 51 to as high as 74 degrees Celsius)
(image 4: Core2 Duo T5870 under a heavy load decoding H265 video at around 69 to 72 degrees Celsius)
(image 5 and 6: Battery being charged and charged)
The video performanceIntel UMA graphics (Intel Mobile GMA X3100)
H264 encoded video playback: H264 MP4 video decoding has been implemented in the video chips for some time now. I expect this X3100 chip should do well.
The CPU load was relatively high compared to other CQ56s.
Verdict: The graphics chip borrows the part of system RAM and maybe that is why CPU is busy as it has less memory and has to use the swap space on the HDD. I don't know. I have to test it with more RAM installed on it.
Battery (18650 cell package)Does it still hold the juice after all these years (made probably in 2009)?
Verdict: It was not dead to my surprise. It seemed to hold some charges. At least the LXQt power management saw the battery OK.
WiFi card Intel PRO/wireless 3945 w/o BluetoothI have seen a tiny device that looked a bit similar to the Bluetooth module described in the PDF manual. As the size and the installed spot were different from the PDF manual picture, I can not ascertain the nature of this tiny board. It could be a Bluetooth card. If so, the WiFi card must be the one without Bluetooth function.
The PDF manual states that there's full-size and reduced form factor Bluetooth modules in existence. Maybe the one I had in my 610 is a reduced form factor one and the one in the picture (PDF manual) is a full-sized one.
Verdict: WiFi card worked so I could see my home network. I could see my own Pixel 7 with the Bluetooth scan. I did not connect it but it seems that Bluetooth works.
SD card readerI don't have any full-seized SD card right now so I can not tell if it works.
ExpressCardI don't have any cards right now to see if it works.
The LCD screenVerdict: It has no obvious blemish and it is bright. It functions well.
The speaker not the speakers The only one monaural speaker works. The volume intensity is Ok.
TouchPadDoes it support some functions?
1. Two-finger scrolling?
2. Double tap actins recognized?
I know that the left botton is dead (the electrical conductive rubber is gone). I don't intend to repair it unless really necessary.
The TouchPad touch area has vertical line to indicate (or it seems to me) the designated place where to simulate the wheel on the mouse. Does it work with Linux?
The verdict: For some reason (possibly loose connection or improper ZIF closure), the TouchPad did was in incommunicado. The keyboard worked first (I could fiddle with the BIOS settings but later the keyboard became unresponsive. I used a USB external mouse and a USB external keyboard to do all the tests above.
Overall verdict:The CPU Core2 Duo T5870 seemed to be a bit hot when given some work to do. It was a bit disheartening but it was not as hot as AMD CPUs on my CQ56.
I have to see the guts to see if I had improperly connected the cables around the TouchPad and make sure that all the ZIF are tightly closed. Otherwise, it works miraculously well.
Notes: Under Haiku OS both WiFi and WLAN devices were recognized. GL Teapot (Open GL 3D benchmark?) ran at around 60 FPS. It was slow.
