The problem is goneAs of July 30 (morning, European Central time), the Noto font problem went away and it seems that everything looks OK.
It seems that Noto font developers decided to adopt a new style of revision number. This caused a bit of confusion.
What is wrong with Otter-Browser? Needs a re-installation?Otter-Browswer worked well with YouTube videos before the re-installation needed after the incident above and its consequent mess.
Now Otter-Browser won't play any YouTube videos. What happened?
My auto insurance agent quitHe just quit and left. No shit. I had one piece of e-mail sent to me from another agent belonging to the same company telling me that he was going to handle my cases.
My now ex-agent had been acting very strangely. He almost did nothing at all for the last few months for me. He had already decided to quit and do something else by then and neglecting the matters.
I hope my cases would resolve quickly from now on. I want to fix my Mazda MX-5.

Experiencing a problem for the momentNoto, a font name used in the system is not the cause of the problem but there has been an issue concerning the this font. The update process has not been properly working for the last few days.
I did not read the warning message carefully and carelessly updated the files (and by doing so I let the updater delete a tons of packages) and the system stopped to boot at all.
I had to down load the latest Nightly Image (July 27 or 28 because of the time zone difference I am not sure) and re-install the entire system. It was easy and painless and as I kept almost no data on the Haiku partition, I did not have to worry about losing anything important.
The problem, according to some replies on the Forum, seems to stem from some dependency issues. The Noto font is in the center of the issues but it is not its fault.
I have another problem that affects me a lot.
For some unknown reason, Otter-Browser stopped to play back YouTube videos. It used to play them very well.
I am not sure if this is related to the problem I wrote about above.
Currently my main OS is this Ubuntu Studio 20.04 and it is working very well.
Garmin Ransomware incidentI am no security expert. I read an article after the dust had settled (not exactly yet but ... at least the service is back now) about the tax deductible issue concerning the ransom money that Garmin had paid.
Is the ransom money considered tax deductible? According to the article I read, the answer is yes.
Does this ransom money tax deductibility apply to real ransom money paid in a human kidnapping case? I had to wonder.
New French lawThere seems to be a new law passed in France a while ago concerning Luxembourg (or Andorra among other countries).
It is now not allowed to purchase more than just a carton of tobacco products (250 g) outside France and bring it (them) back to France. You have to declare it (them) and pay the taxes on it (them).
It used to be 4 times more. Luxembourg (and I heard from some guy from Andorra whom I met last year in Belgium before the start of the Tour de France that he wanted to declare before starting the conversation that he had no extra cigarettes to sell on him as so often he got asked the same question as soon as people saw the license plates on his car) is a shopping spot for French, German and Belgium commuters and residents nearby to buy cigarettes, alcohol and fuel.
It is also a must-stop-and-fill-up (ditto: cigarettes, alcohol and fuel) spot for long range driving truckers who go across the continent.
The article tells that the shop keepers (who sell cigarettes in nearby territories in France) are not excited about the new law. Some shop owner tells that the cigarettes shops are long gone in the area and he does not see any profitable future for himself.
For daily commuters, the new law is a minor annoyance as they had to buy cigarettes in Luxembourg more often. They would keep buying them here in Luxembourg anyway.

WTF! sudo kate not possible? In the GRUB screw-up aftermath, I have to edit some sensitive text files. Those files that regulates the behavior of GRUB under "/etc/grub.d/" or "/etc/default/".
That was when I issued commands like "sudo kate /etc/********".
"Kate" seemed to be the default (or recommended) text editor of the Kubuntu desktop. I did not see any other text editors. I was led to believe that Kate could do everything. I thought it had everything I needed. Kate seeemed to be a very sophisticated and highly functional editor.
I was appalled when I saw an error message that what I wanted to do was not feasible. I was at a loss but decided to install a simple editor that would work with "sudo". "leafpad" was my choice.
I could not sudo with leafpad for some reason.
My last resort was just opening the text files that I wanted to edit as a normal user and trying to save it after making the necessary changes. It worked! "Kate" prompted me to type in the password to do so.
She (I mean Ms Kate) did not ask the password in advance when I opened the file but she asked me to provide the password when I attempted to save the changes.

Basil Pluto (Bike Dog Basket)I am considering purchasing it but I have to make sure that it would fit on my bike otherwise it would be wasting my money. All the images are taken from the DuckDuckGo'ed images on the Internet.
Edo (what does this mean? Is it related to ancient name of Tokyo?) can be fitted, according to the manual, on a 30 mm to 50 mm round tube. My Cervélo RS has a headtube shaped in a squarish form. I have to measure it. This first image is telling me that this black plastic adapter is needed to cramp on a 30 mm pipe.
Also the camp need 30 mm of length. This means that the edo has 30 mm of hight in the second image. I guess Edo can camp on a 50 mm pipe without the black plastic adapter but with a thin layer of protective agent.
This image seems to suggest that the length of this protruding basket stay can extend several inches.
It can fit on this kind of bike. If I swap the basket to a smaller one, I think I can use it on my bike.

Only when it feels well?I know for sure that sound chip in my HP Pro3120 is, one way or another, supported by Haiku as it did make sound on a couple of occasions. Still it does not work well most of the time. That is why I call it a woe.
For some reasons unknown (if I have to guess it is the driver issues), it does not work most of the time. It is OK as I use it for fun.
Obviously the USB port is supported as it does accept the input from the USB keyboard and mouse but other than those devices I don't see any sign of USB support for other devices.
I have a Wifi dongle on the USB port but the OS seems not to recognize it. I tried some external USB HDDs but they are not recognized at all.
It is OK as it is still under development.
Addendum:
Only one day later with no updates (I am using Nightly Images version), sound works suddenly.

A Basil product called PlutoPluto reminds me of the dog (a D*sn*y character) and what this company Basil wanted to do was to associate their product with the image built around this fictitious dog character. It took me a while before this possible association dawned on me.
Anyway, for me Pluto is primarily the name of a heavenly body in our solar system.
This is the Pluto basket. It also has an option wire hood to keep your dog securely inside the basket.
(image taken from the product manufacturer's site)
This is called EDO. What does Edo mean?
(ditto)
If this fits on my Cervélo RS (size 51), I would like to buy the Pluto system. The description of this Edo says that the maximum size that it can cramp is 50 mm round pipe out of the box.
It can be modified by swapping the four bolts. Longer bolts can extend the cramp so that it could cramp even bigger pipe (the stem pipe of the bike).
Should I try?

Now I can hear what Haiku saysI don't know why but (updates?) I found Yesterday (the day before) that my old HP Pro 3120 can speak under Haiku OS. I did not expect to hear any sound from YouTube videos but I just tuned in with Otter-Browser (as WebPositive does not support HTML5 videos).
To my surprise, the sound came out. Several days ago the YouTube videos were silent but now eloquent.
Mozc behaviors under Haiku OS and Linux (Kubuntu)I use Mozc to type in Japanese. It works fine generally in either Haiku OS or Linux environment. The biggest complaint that I have with it under Kubuntu is that when I switch on "Japanese Input Method" the default input is set to "Direct" mode.
Let me explain to you (nobody since no one is actually reading this)!
This is the mozc (under IBus) menu. Immediately it is called for the first time after login, the default mode is set to "Direct". What "Direct" mode means is "as is" and it means that (since before it was called whatever typed on the keyboard had been interpreted as just alphabet letters) whichever keys I click, alphabet letters appear as if evoking mozc (Japanese Input Method) meant nothing.
When I switch to "Hiragana" mode, the input from the keyboard is interpreted as Japanese words. For example, typing "i" followed by SPACE key produces "い" and typing "ai" followed by SPACE key (convert command) and then by RETURN key (or ENTER key = finalize) would induces several candidates like "愛" or "アイ" and so on.
I have been frustrated by this behavior because all I want and the only thing I want to see when I evoke mozc is to type in Japanese but it won't allow me to do it immediately.
On the other hand, Lo and behold!, the mozc on Haiku OS lets me do it. As soon as I evoke mozc on Haiku, I can start typing in Japanese. I am happy.
How can I change its behavior? Are there any setting files (hidden because the file names start with ".") to make it happen? I will look on my home directory for those hidden files to see if I can do something about it.

How to fasten Hannah on my road racer bikeI bought this bag a while ago but it does not fit my road racer out of the box.
(image 1: image taken from Amazon.de)
I was thinking of buying this bug but was not sure of the size of the stem-vice device.
(image 2: image taken from Amazon.de)
I am thinking of buying this front carrier and it needs extra parts to fix it on my bike.
(image 3: image taken from the manufacturer's site basil.com)
This one is needed
(image 4: image taken from ditto)
This picture shows a subtle but clear image of another stay that goes on the caliper brake fixing bolt (L-shaped bar)
(image 5: image taken from ditto)
How do I fasten Hannah (a cat) on my bike while I ride my bike?
Options that I found are:
1. Place her in a back pack style carrier and on my back
2. Place her in a front bag that hangs on the handle bar
3. Place her in a pet trailer that attaches on the bike
4. Place her in a bag that attaches on a front carrier that attaches on the front fork
Every option has its ups and downs (pros and cons). I am now considering the fourth (4th) option. The pros are as follow.
a. It does not make steering unstable (as opposed to option 2)
b. I can always keep my eyes on her(as opposed to option 1)
c. The whole system is not so cumbersome to carry - my Mazda MX-5 does not have much cargo space (as opposed to option3)
While I do find cons as follow.
d. Visually (aesthetically) a bit ugly
e. The caliper brake stay can not be removed or installed so easily
I can certainly tolerate d. and e. I am hoping the small plastic device that came with the front bag (image1) that regulates the distance between the bag and the stem could be used to replace this semi-permanent ugly L-shaped angle.

Why Haiku?... because it is there and I like it.
I once used genuine BeOS on a PC (not PowerPC Mac at that time back in the 90's). Free trial version was freely distributed in Japan (I was living in Japan) and I bought a PC magazine which had a free giveaway CD.
The PC had an AMD K6 or something in it. It was not a powerful CPU but the PC felt livelier and crispier with BeOS than with Windows 98 (or?).
Haiku is under development. It has been so for some time. It still is. Although it is functional, it lacks many features.
On my old HP Pro 3120 (Intel chipset) it works well on the surface when I use its VGA video port avoiding its DVI port.
Haiku's default web browser, WebPositive, does not support HTML5 videos so I can not view YouTube videos at all. Otter-Broser on the other hand supports them and I can clearly watch YouTube videos but I found the sound does not work. The sound device on the mainboard seems not to be supported.
An external USB HDD (formatted as NT filesystem) is not recognized. A USB WIFI dongle which works well under Linux does not work under Haiku.
GRUB repaired (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair)Now my old PC boots and I can choose Haiku or Ubuntu Studio at my will.

Hello from HAIKU OS Walter (Revision hrev54430) x86_64I am writing this entry on my old used HP Pro 3120 running HAIKU OS. I have been trying to set the PC up so that I can easily switch between HAIKU OS and Linux by use of the Grub boot manager.
Now the Windows 7 is gone as I wanted it to be. Haiku OS is now installed on the partition where the Windows 7 was.
It took me while until I came to these settings.
1. How do I make GRUB recognize Haiku OS on a partition?
2. Is Haiku OS's boot manager capable of booting Linux?
These were the questions that I wanted to know. It took me while to figure things out and get to the right places to get the answers. I still don't know if booting Linux is possible with Haiku OS's boot manager. Probably it won't.
On the other hand, booting Haiku OS with Grub is easy. I searched on the Net how to make Grub recognize Haiku OS on a partition. I found the related information easily and it worked very well.
Haiku OS's default web browser, WebPositive, could not let me login this FC2 blog service so I had to install Otter-Browser to login here and write this entry.
From here, I am writing this entry under Ubuntu Studio 20.04 (Ubuntu Studio over Kubuntu 20.04). I switched to Linux because I wanted to modify some image file to illustrate a minor annoyance that I found in some application on Haiku OS. It is about the Japanese input method (mozc).

UCI had very kind (and new) pages for race schedules(https://www.uci.org/road/calendar)
I checked the FSCL's site for information but they did not (don't as of now).
I thought maybe UCI (the governing body of cycling federations all over the world) had at least the dates and some additional information. I was right.
According to the information provided by the UCI's site, all the time trial events will take place on Thursday, August 20th and road race events will take place on Sunday, August 23rd. The venue of the event is very likely around Mamer, a community near Luxembourg city because the event is hosted by the cycling club based in Mamer.
I have been to Mamer for several times. A 3-day stage race (female) is normally held there. This year it was, I think, cancelled so they had extra money set aside and decided to host the National Championship, maybe.

HAIKU OS not booting on my PC because ...I was wondering why it did not boot on my "seemingly an old-school" PC.
I visited its official site and sought for some kind of hint on its "community" page.
I think I found the reason right away. (https://discuss.haiku-os.org/t/intel-gma-4500-vga-dvi/9755)
The HD LCD monitor is hooked up to the DVI port on the Intel G45/G43 chipset (integrated graphics chip).
So All I have to do to see HAIKU OS to boot on it is to unplug the current cable and use VGA to "whatever" cable!!
All right I will do it!

SterilizationI found (actually Google suggested it to me on my phone as obviously I read some articles concerning cats from time to time on my phone) this article.
It was originally posted on "The Brussels Times" (online news site?). It reports the situation concerning the sterilization of house cats in Belgium.
I can not quote the entire article so I excerpt some of the lines here. I don't want to disturb them (The Brussels Times organization) and I simply want to show respect for them by quoting this very interesting piece of news.
The title:
"Nine out of 10 domestic cats are sterilized in Belgium"
"In Belgium, cat sterilization has been compulsory since the end of 2017 in Wallonia and since 2018 in Brussels and Flanders to counter feline overcrowding.
Out of 1,321,116 domestic cats in Wallonia, 90% of them are sterilized, according to a new survey carried out by Ipsos at the request Gaia, a Belgian animal rights association.
In Wallonia, 89% of male cats are neutered and 92% of females are sterilized, according to the survey. The owners of cats do it mainly for health reasons or to make the cats calmer.
In Flanders, 90% of cats are also sterilized and in the Brussels-Capital Region the number is 83%."
First you have to understand that Belgium is a two-part country. It consists of predominantly French-speaking southern region called Wallonia and Flemish (reads Dutch)-speaking (most of them speak English and French, too) northern part called Flanders.
As they live in different cultures (not too different), the statistics are separately shown above.
I had my Hannah operated on when she was around 10 months old when she started to show the sign of being in heat (nightly meowing loudly). I heard (or at least was led to believe) that cats live longer and healthier when sterilized and I wanted my Hannah live long and healthily.
Hannah came from (comes from) an area deep in Wallonia (near Luxembourg border). Her parents were not sterilized at the time of her conception, obviously. So her parents belonged to the precious 10 percent rare species.
I don't know if the questionnaires sent by IPSOS were written only in French or in Flemish, too. I guess that in Flanders, most of the public publication are written in Flemish (if not in Dutch) accompanied by French. I also presume that in Wallonia could be written only in French. I could be wrong.
In Luxembourg, I find so many letters sent from some government branches written in French, German and English. Sometimes there are fourth or even fifth language used in one of those letters. They are likely Portuguese or Italian. This shows the immigration history of Luxembourg.
We don't find Luxembourgish language so often as it is supposed to be a spoken language. So the announcement (mostly pre-recorded) made on board trains are made in French, German and Luxembourgish. Sometimes I hear train conductors making French, German and English announcement on board a train warning that first class seats require tickets.
Monolingual is not an option in Luxembourg for most people. Only the French or Belgians from Wallonia are allowed to be monolingual. As in Luxembourg others (non-French and non-Wallonian)
tolerate those and learn French at home, school and at other places.

AirPort Express A 1264 too hot and hangsA fatal design flaw or just a feature? That is the question. I finally gave up on it and replaced it with just a USB dongle that I purchased a long time ago (NETGEAR) and it works far better than AirPort Express A1264, which is ten times bigger than the USB dongle.
Should I dismantle (crack open) the AirPort Express and drill some holes in the case?
Haiku OS does not like Intel Q9500?I tried the RC1, RC2 and nightly build from late June 2020 but the results were same. It boots to the startup splash screen and the boot process got completed almost to the end when it hanged. The disk access ceased and screen got black as the video signal died off. What was the matter?

PDF file of announcement: http://fscl.lu/wp-content/uploads/Communiqu%C3%A9-Meisterschaften-final.pdf
Nationale Meisterschaft Zeitfahren und Straße(22.08 –23.08.2020)
The cycling sport governing body of Luxembourg is called Fédération du Sport Cycliste Luxembourgeois and shortened FSCL. Its URL is above. It posts the detailed information on the events (Road Race and Time Trial) just a couple weeks before the actual events as long as I know this organization. The event's venue is not announced far ahead of the events. Usually a couple of weeks ahead of the events.
Sometimes the cycling clubs (and their respective town that they are based in) have hard time hosting the event and the venue is set just before the event. I can not blame them.
A several years ago it (the burden of hosting the event) was so heavy until someone came forward to donate his own money to help lessen the burden (on the hosting cycling club and the community). Frank Schleck (who was participating) thanked him for the generosity of his at the podium.
Anyway, the original dates for the events (male/female, junior/senior/elite/etc., road/time trial) were moved to the dates below. It has only two days so they might not hold some minor events. At least they have to host 4 events, namely, male and female Elite riders (those riding professionally) Road Race and Time Trial because they represent the country and are greatly exposed to media.
Ironically, for these 4 events we almost know for sure who are going to win without holding the actual events because the national champions for these events have been unchanged and unchallenged for several years by now. For formality's sake?
August 22nd (Saturday) Probably the time trial race
August 23rd (Sunday) Most likely the road race
The whereabouts for the events are totally unknown to me. I just hope they are held near my residence area or near my work place area for ease of access.

Power2MaxI want it. I have wished that I had it for a long time. It has bee list for more than several years by now. A power meter to make me ride my bike more.
I like my SpeedPlay Zero pedals so choosing some pedal based power meter was out of the question.
I like my ROTOR 3D+ crankset so choosing some crank based power meter was not an option.
I like my Zipp 404 tubular (old one purchased in 2005 or 2006?) but I train on cheaper wheels so purchasing a rear hub based (wheel) power meter was not optimal.
A spider based one is the only choice left.
A new service point (or shop) in Luxembourg! A new development!
I occasionally visited the site (www.power2max.com) to see if they had irresistible sales events. I also checked their partner shops if I could see the actual equipment up and close. For a long time the closest real shop was located near Frankfurt (am Main), Germany. I had to drive more than 200 km to get there.
I was surprised to learn that there was one in Luxembourg, the country of my residence. This must be fairy new as the shop does not mention anything about the Power2Max devices.
Team CSCI read two online articles concerning incidents who once rode for Team CSC or which happened in this organization.
First off, I came to Europe from Japan in late September in 2003. The reason was to watch bike races and ride a bike myself. I was suddenly struck by a bike (race) fever in Spring of 2003. It was then I bought a bike (Riese & Müller Birdy) and started reading bike magazines (first find out what to buy and how to maintenance). It was not long before I grabbed other magazines displayed close to those I took up first.
The world of road bike racing! I was enchanted by them. Since it was Spring, the news of Spring races flew in the magazines like Paris-Roubaix, Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. I had to go (better live) there and watch those races, so I thought to myself.
In July I had a call (out of the blue) from Germany from someone I knew and he asked if I wanted to come to Germany to work. I said (without a split second of hesitation), "Yes."
The rest is history. I tell this story to those who wonder why and how an Asian man (amid predominantly European audience) ended up in Europe and avidly visiting road bike races. I always tell this story that Tyler Hamilton changed my life.
I really want to see him someday and tell him, "Thank you very much that you have changed my life."
I watched a very very short digest video of Tour de France 2003 in July and I was very much moved by Tyler Hamilton (Team CSC) who finished the race at fourth position despite breaking the collar bone.
I was determined by then that I would be a supporter of Tyler Hamilton and Team CSC. It was sometime early Spring of 2004 that I learned that Tyler Hamilton switched to Phonak team.
Ultimately I decided that I would stay with Team CSC. So everything in my life in Europe evolved around Team CSC.
Case one: Nicki Sørensen's doping affair
His confession of his doping past.
Case two: Carlos Sastre and Schleck brothers feud
My very favorite Kurt Arvesen's account of the feud between them during the Tour de France 2008. I was there. I took more than 3 weeks of vacation to be there that year.
These things won't change a thing.
AirPort Express running too hot?It would have a sudden stroke (a heart attack of sort) and stop working rather frequently. I suspect that it is a heat stroke. I had to unplug it and re-insert it to make it work again. I would need a dedicated fan or heat sinks.
