well that's a lot of people forget that these aren't just residents to me. a lot of these were friends, so i mean i've lost a lot of good people. and it's still hard.

it's a tragedy. and that's why i know that you know i appreciate you being here helping us to educate boards and directors. that's the most important thing. what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.

can you tell us kind of? take us back to what happened that night. who called you. when did you show up? what time would you see?

sorry might get a little emotional. i got the call probably about five or ten minutes after the actual collapse happened. the call that i got, the pool had collapsed. the president of the association, so she did live on site. she did get out. she lived on the side that didn't collapse. and my first thought and i actually said this to her. i said that's impossible. can't happen

or you said when she told you about the collapse. you told her that's impossible.

yeah it does. it can't happen. we talked for a couple minutes and she was a lot of distress and gene is a very strong woman and i have never heard of that emotional. and all i could think of was i've got to get there. it's a 12 minute or 12 mile drive there. normally it takes me about 20 to 30 minutes. i made it less than 10. there was two fire trucks there and the police had already started to cordon off the area. when i first parked there, they're like you can't go up there

so there were just two fire trucks there and you got there pretty quickly

there's a fire station just down the block. i mean you're talking about something that woke up half a mile radius. the officer that actually was talking to me. i explained to who i was and he called the battalion chief, acting chief at the site. and she's like get him over here.

i happen to meet the time over to the collapse site. i was probably two blocks off. it was a police barricade. they weren't allowing people in. so i would actually going up to the fire truck and the building official for the town of surfside was there which i knew. because he was actually new to the town. he and i had actually been on the roof of the building because we were redoing the roofs the night before. about probably about six o'clock that evening. he couldn't believe what happened. one of the first things was the garage is filled up with water it's like. did you shut down the water mains no where do you do that at. we went over to the valves tried turning them. they were seized. so it's like hey jim can you call and give us a church key you know to turn it off at the street within probably less than a minute. public works was already there turn the water off. fpno wasn't sure where the main disconnects. because normally they would shut it down for the vault room which was in the building. unfortunately back again when this building was built, the records are a little sketchy. no building ever does, so it's like the manhole is right there in the street. does there has to be disconected

we're talking about the disconnect to the electric

again you have water point into your garage at that point, again you have two, eight to twelve inch main lines pouring thousands of gallons of water into the building into the basement so it's basically a giant swimming pool. and i'm not safe for the fire ban or anyone else
