however it is important to say that the vast majority of buildings are indeed designed and constructed safely. so if you've not alresdy done so we do hope thatyou'll sign up to cross you can seach cross safety or scan this QR code you'll then get our communications directly and even if you don't register you can still search our database forinformation and you can submit a safety reports are the option on which we survive so please do contribute if you can. it may help to make structures safer. thanky you for listeningand we can now move on to the main event. so to introduce our speaker this evening gary klein gabby is a senior principal and executive vice president of west jenny elsener associates and is based in their chicago office. for over 40 years gary has worked with buildings and other structures that are suffering from deterioration distress or failure and his investigated numerous structural collapses including the 1981 collapse of the skywalks at the hyatt regency hotel in kansas city. the 1996 collapse of the KB bridge in the republic of palau and the 2021 collapse of the champlain towers south in florida. the subject of this lecture for his work in these investigations. gary was elected to the national academy of engineering in 2016. so i'll now hand over to our main speaker mr. gary klein.

well paul thank you very much for that very kind introduction and i was struck by those key lessons and keep those in mind as i go through this presentation i think many of those will surface again. so we're going to talk about the 2021 collapse of champlain towers south in surfside florida that's a shot of the building before the collapse. by the end of the presentation you should b able to describe the significant conditions before the collapse recognize punching shear related distress which may be very important and parameters affecting flat plate slab performance summarize the timeline for the pool deck collapse in subsequent building collapse the progression of that collapse and explain at least our theory as to as to the collapse . if you permit me a brief coomercial i'm with i wish danny elser associates. we're headquartered in northbrook Illinois as paul mentioned but for about seven years we've been in london and WJ is different than most engineering firms our entire focus is on problem solving and usually based on instrumentation testing reseach and solving and usuallybasedon instrumentation testing research and detailed investigation and we're doing that same type of thing here in london

and i should also acknowledge our client we were hired by the condominium association for champlain towers south through their attorney ackerman and michael goldberg and brenda rodmacher did a tremendous job in that they helped coordinate the investigation for the civil litigation. because we had plaintiffs and other defendants all interested in caryying on investigation in the association was kind of in middle of that and they did a terrific job. the fees were ultimately paid by james river insurance company and their attorneys were involved clyde and company we want to acknowledge them as well and also the wje staff i'm here representing them including matt fad and my colleague who really LED this investigation. i took the initial call but he's from south florida and did a fabulous job and there were a lot of man-hours in field investigation document reviw structural modeling and geotechnical consulting.
