The Emancipation Proclamation was the biggest PR campaign/nothing Burger in US history. It was an optics and military tactic to create confusion in the South. It didn’t free anybody in the Northern states. In fact, slavery remained in effect in three northern states until ratification of the 13th Amend after the war.

The Emancipation Proclamation occurred long after the initiation of hostilities and cannot be used to support a claim that different opinions about slavery forced the North to pursue a war of conquest of the slave states (thus keeping the slave states closer rather than further removed). That’s akin to hating a girl or guy so much you feel compelled to marry them.

The North did not need to end slavery in departed states in order to end slavery in remaining states. This exercise is, and always has been, a tautology. “We did this voluntary thing because we had to stay in Union with other states that don’t want to do this voluntary thing.� Pure nonsense.
