As expected, Pope John Paul II, in his sweeping apologies for the mistreatment of Jews by Christians through the ages, said nothing about the “silence” of his predecessor, Pius XII, about the Holocaust of the Jews during World War II. Many commentators, Jewish and gentile, are therefore calling the new apologies insufficient.
Even the New York Times, forgetting its own praise of Pius during the war for his condemnations of racial persecution, has joined the chorus of calumny. Pius has become the target of a virulent hate campaign that began with the play The Deputy in 1963 and has recently gained new impetus from a book smearing Pius as “Hitler’s Pope.”
Hitler himself would have found this judgment surprising; he called Pius a “mouthpiece of the Jews.” Israel Zolli, Grand Rabbi of Rome during the war, agreed with Hitler on this point: he was so grateful for Pius’s efforts to save Jews that he became a Catholic after the war and took Pius’s baptismal name, Eugenio, as his own. When Pius died in 1958, many Jewish leaders, including Golda Meir, praised him profusely.
What has happened since 1958 to obscure Pius’s good deeds and blacken his name? The facts haven’t changed; but popular perspective has.
True, Pius never specifically condemned “the Holocaust”; he never heard the term used as we now use it. It came into use only after the war — in fact, only years after his death. Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, who did virtually nothing to save Jews from Nazis, never referred to the persecution as “the Holocaust” either and said very little about it in any terms. But, being liberal heroes, they have been pardoned. Spain’s Francisco Franco saved tens of thousands of Jews but, like Pius, was a “reactionary” Catholic and is thus ineligible for liberal praise.
A thoughtful book by the historian Peter Novick, The Holocaust in American Life (published by Houghton Mifflin), reminds us not only that the term the Holocaust is of recent origin but also that it represents a very recent way of thinking.
During the 1940s, the persecution of the Jews was not neatly separated, in people’s minds, from the enormous welter of violence that was World War II. Novick observes that “throughout the war (and, as we will see, for some time thereafter) what we now call the Holocaust was neither a distinct entity nor particularly salient. The murder of European Jewry, insofar as it was understood or acknowledged, was just one among the countless dimensions of a conflict that was consuming the lives of tens of millions around the globe. It was not ‘the Holocaust’; it was simply the (underestimated) Jewish fraction of the holocaust then engulfing the world.”
He repeats the point emphatically: “What we now call ‘the Holocaust’ … seemed to most people at the time simply the Jewish portion of the worldwide holocaust that had consumed between fifty and sixty million victims.”
Even Jewish groups didn’t make the kind of vocal protest Pius is now being condemned for failing to make. They preferred to speak in more general terms of the various victims of Nazism. Novick quotes them as speaking in rhetorically inclusive lists — “the Czechs, the Poles, the Jews, the Russians” or “Catholics, Protestants, Jews” — that gave the impression that the Jews were only one among many Nazi target groups. Only much later did Jewish suffering gain preeminence in popular understanding. Wartime decorum resisted singling out specific ethnic groups; that was felt to be the Nazis’ game.
From a Catholic perspective, it’s more surprising that Pius said so little about Communism, the bombing of cities, and nuclear weapons. He could easily have discouraged Catholics from fighting for the Allied cause if he’d been “Hitler’s Pope.” Throughout the war, in fact, he ignored Hitler’s pleas for a condemnation of Communism, though before and after the war he was militantly anti-Communist.
Millions of Catholics fought and died on the Allied side. One wonders whether they would have been so ready to make sacrifices if they had known that after the war countless of their fellow Catholics would fall under Communist rule, while their Pope and their Church would be smeared as Hitler’s accomplices.

That they needed to answer that suggestsm (to me at any rate) that the Jews’ plight was not seen by most people at the time as simply the Jewish portion of the worldwide holocaust. Their plight was singled out as a question every pacifist had to answer. In other words not only was it a prominent issue that stood out in the wider holocaust, but every pacifist had a clear obligation to justify his (or her) position in that regard.
Thus it seems to me that to most people at the time the Jewish persecution was singled out from the general conflagration as a cardinal issue. One that every pacifist was obliged to address.

Sorry, but you got it wrong (or partially right). First- you are right that after WW 2 Jews’ plight was seen as a part- significant, but still just a part- of a broader spectrum of suffering. Second- just, Orwell, when talking about Gandhi, refers to limits of pacifism & non-violent resistance before the war, not after it.
And Gandhi’s “proposal”, while bizarre & intriguing, was not realistic. Even if German Jews decided to kill themselves at, say, the rate of 1000 per day, I doubt it would have worked. Modern totalitarian state has immense power in covering up & distorting the facts, thus preventing emotional reaction of the majority of its citizens. At least for a very significant period of time.

The Germans, like the Southern plantation owners had black slaves, used Jews and others as a labor force. The Americans bombed the supply lines to these work camps neart the end of the war to prevent food and medicines to go in and war material to exit. The result was significant death due to starvation and disease. *Ostderlieblung was a process that lasted nearly 1000 years and involved the eastward movement of Germans as groups of highly skilled agricultural workers. They were solicited by aristocrats, princes and kings all over central and eastern Europe and given land and privileges beyond typical peasantry. A better term in English would be ‘yeoman farmer’. By the time of the WW2 there were significant populations of Germans all along the Danube through Yugoslavia and into Romania where the Danube feeds into the Black Sea. Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and even as far east as the Volga River had villages and towns full of Germans. They excelled in agriculture and trades as well as being reliable defenders of the land they inhabited. They were highly respected and well regarded wherever they settled. During the 90’s they brought back a remainder of Germans from the Volga and Siberia to Germany after reunification. An Instagram post by an Israel Defense Forces sniper boasts of murdering 13 Gazan children in one day.
An IDF Combat Engineering Corps Soldier, specifically, David D. Ovadia posed with a Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifle.
Ovadia posted his comments on the Instagram account of Palestinian Sherrii ElKaderi. The image was quickly screen captured in case Ovadia came to his senses and realized that he could be prosecuted for his admission of war crimes. It is unclear and perhaps unlikely that the Barrett was used in the commission of such crimes, as this weapon is usually reserved for the best of the best marksmen. In any event, Ovadia is in active deployment and openly confesses to killing Gazan civilian children.
While not specifying what weapon he used, the posting of himself with the .50 caliber rifle was obviously meant to be visually intimidating to Palestinians. In the meantime, while more information is gathered on Ovadia, the “hacktivist” group “Anonymous” took control of his Instagram account, deleting it entirely.
For “good measure” Anonymous sources said that they hacked the websites of the Mossad intelligence agency in Israel “for the brave IDF Sniper”, in reference to Ovadia. By 11:30, they had taken down the Israeli Ministry of Defense as well, and similarly attributed it as a response to Ovadia’s confessions. Jews figured in his plans only peripherally at best; he stated “the Jews can help themselves” years earlier when the Concordat with fascist Italy was created. He was Papal Nuncio in Munich when that city was seized by Red revolutionaries, whom he denounced in vilest anti-semitic terms after they “liberated” his luxury limousine.
When he was Cardinal Secretary of State, the future Pope (his real name was Eugenio Pacelli) wrote the final draft of Pius XI’s 1937 encyclical Mit Brendenner Sorge (“With deep anxiety”). This encyclical is championed by papal apologists as resistance to nazism but it is notable for failing to mention Hitler or National Socialism by name. It was composed in response to the arrests in Germany in 1935 – 37 of many Catholic clergy and laymen. He characterized these men and women as victims of Nazi persecution, but they were in reality charged by local prosecutors with sexually abusing children entrusted to their care. Goebbels accused the Catholic church of fostering a culture within which pedophilia was tolerated and even encouraged. This was denounced as propaganda at the time, though recent experience requires a reconsideration of this claim.

The excerpts from Solzhenitsyn’s “Two Hundred Years Together” in English which have been posted provide a different account of the place and treatment of Jews in Russia. American historians who’ve read the work in Russian judge it to be fair and without bigotry. And yet, despite its translation and publication in German shortly after its Russian publication, and a number of reviews in English, it has remained untranslated and unpublished in English. This suggests its account is being suppressed. Evaluating documents and claims such as these by Saggy will be less controversial after “Two Hundred Years Together” is availible.

By allowing these countries to steal land from Germany and Austria and then mistreat large numbers of ethnic Germans under their occupation until the Germans finally put someone on power that said “enough”? The 200,000 Czechs that pledged loyalty to Germany and Adolf Hitler in 1942 at a rally in Prague belies the propaganda and lies used to make that war come about and Jews played a major role creating that propaganda.
We didn’t have historian David Irving in the 1940’s to inform the world that wealthy Jews were paying Winston Churchill large amounts of money to become their anti-German mouthpiece in the media before putting him in power a few years later so he could make war against Germany for them.

I wonder what you think the Pope should have criticized the Germans for. What is in that head of yours? Prior to 1941 when the Soviet-German war broke out Jews remained in Germany, unless they emigrated (which many had done). If that was true then the laws restricting German Jews were justified, for that was how the National Socialists viewed the Jews, as Weizmann expressed it, hostile to and enemies of Germany. They thought many behaved like traitors during and after WW I and that they were not loyal to Germany.

St. Thomas Aquinas took a more benign view, arguing that the state would be necessary even if man had never fallen from grace; but he agreed with Augustine that an unjust law is no law at all, a doctrine that would severely diminish any known state.
Most evidently, Jesus told his disciples that as soon as you consent to use the monetary system of any nation or empire you have to obey to its political system and rulers. It must be noted that for Jesus you were part of the Roman empire and ideally a Roman citizen in becoming who should ask for his full rights of citizenry as soon as you used Roman currency for your transactions. Which means that for Jesus anybody who uses the dollar as a reserve currency should consider himself as an American. Jews as a rule were more attached to Roman denarii than to Jerusalem for sure therefore they had no right to any form of national sovereignty.

The heart is a precious thing. The term can sometimes be confusing for people reading Orthodox writings. On occasion it almost sounds synonomous with the soul. At other times, it is identified with the nous, that organ of perception by which we know God. The Scriptures use the term (especially in the Old Testament) but never clearly define what it means. Some number of the Fathers make a literal identification with the physical heart while preserving its function as an organ of perception. Biology aside, the heart is a way of speaking about that which is deepest within – the seat of the self that is most truly “who we are.”
Christ speaks of the heart in a variety of ways. There are dangers that reside in the heart:
“But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” (Matthew 15:18–19)
When a group criticized Him for healing on the Sabbath, while a man with a crippled hand stood in need, we read:
And He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. (Mark 3:5)
More positively, however, Christ promised:
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matt. 5:8)
A very powerful take on the coldness of the heart can be found in the sayings of St. Seraphim of Sarov:
“God is a fire that warms and kindles the heart and inward parts. Hence, if we feel in our hearts the cold which comes from the devil—for the devil is cold—let us call on the Lord. He will come to warm our hearts with perfect love, not only for Him but also for our neighbor, and the cold of him who hates the good will flee before the heat of His countenance.”
The heart is subject to injury. The traumas and the contradictions of our lives easily wound the heart. Our fears, our anger, our shame, our darkened memories and such, all contribute to the heart’s coldness. And, reflecting on St. Seraphim’s words, we know that those elements are intensified by the actions and whisperings of the adversary. All of the actions of asceticism – fasting, vigils, etc., have the single purpose of cleansing and healing the heart. Sadly, we often give greater attention to what we are eating (or not eating) than the things that are eating at our hearts. St. Basil said, “It does you no good to abstain from meat and to then devour your brother.”
We are lulled into a form of complacency by our culture’s exaltation of “objective” knowledge. We fail to notice that, even in very mundane things, dark musings, such as anger and resentment, can affect our performance. Driving angry can be as distracting as texting. We are not compartmentalized beings – with some objective monitor operating independently of the state of our heart.

Should you encounter people who try to challenge you with these claims, ask them to explain where it is they got their information.
