Cornelia Groefsema Kennedy (b. 1923) was a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. She served on senior status until her death on May 12, 2014.[1][2]

Early life and education

Kennedy earned her B.A. and J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1945 and 1947, respectively.[1]

Professional career

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Michigan

Kennedy was nominated to the Eastern District of Michigan by President Richard Nixon on September 3, 1970, to a seat vacated by Thaddeus Machrowicz; she was confirmed by the Senate on October 6, 1970, and received commission the next day. From 1977 to 1979, she served as the chief judge. She was the first female judge on the Eastern District of Michigan as well as the only female judicial nominee of Richard Nixon.[3] She served the Eastern District of Michigan until she was elevated to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on October 3, 1979.[1] Kennedy was succeeded in this position by Horace Gilmore.

Sixth Circuit

Kennedy was nominated to the Sixth Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on April 9, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629; she was confirmed by the Senate on September 25, 1979, and received commission the next day. She assumed senior status on March 1, 1999. Kennedy served on the court until her passing on May 12, 2014.[2][1]
