Robert Lanier Anderson III is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He was reassigned to a new seat on the Eleventh Circuit on October 1, 1981, which was created by statute reorganizing the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. Prior to his reassignment to the Eleventh Circuit, Judge Anderson served on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit from 1979 to 1981.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Macon, Georgia, Anderson earned his A.B. from Yale College in 1958 and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1961.[1]

Military career

Anderson served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963.[1]

Professional career

Judicial career

11th Circuit Court of Appeals

Anderson was reassigned to a new seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit on October 1, 1981, which was created by statute reorganizing the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. Anderson served as chief judge of the court from 1999 to 2002. He assumed senior status on January 31, 2009, and he was succeeded in this position by Judge Beverly Martin.[1]

Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals

Anderson was nominated to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on April 18, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. The U.S. Senate confirmed Anderson on July 12, 1979, and he received his commission on July 13, 1979. Anderson's service on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit terminated on October 1, 1981, due to his reassignment to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.[1]
