Florence Ellinwood Allen (1884-1966) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. She was nominated to the court by President Roosevelt in 1934, becoming the nation's first female Article III federal judge. Prior to her service on the federal courts, Allen was the first woman to serve a state Supreme Court. She was elected Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court in 1922.[1] Allen died on September 12th, 1966.

Professional career

Judicial nominations and appointments

She was nominated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on March 6, 1934 to replace Smith Hickenlooper. She was confirmed by the Senate on March 15th, and received her commission on March 21st. From 1958 to 1959 Allen was the chief judge. On October 5, 1959, she assumed senior status and continued to serve in this capacity until her death on September 12, 1966.[2]
