Murray Irwin Gurfein (1907-1979) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the Second Circuit in 1974 after an appointment from Richard Nixon. He joined the Southern District of New York in 1971 after an appointment from Richard Nixon. At the time of appointment, he was a private practice attorney in New York City. He served until his death on December 16, 1979.[1]

Judicial career

Second Circuit

Gurfein was nominated to the Second Circuit by President Richard Nixon on July 11, 1974, to a seat vacated by Paul Hays; he was confirmed by the Senate on August 22, 1974, and received commission five days later. He served until his death on December 16, 1979.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Lawrence Pierce.

Southern District of New York

Gurfein was nominated to the Southern District of New York by President Richard Nixon on April 14, 1971, to a seat vacated by Thomas Murphy; he was confirmed by the Senate on May 20, 1971, and received commission that same day. He served the Southern District of New York until September 11, 1974, before advancing to the Second Circuit.[1] Gurfein was succeeded in this position by Charles Haight.
