Walter McGovern was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He joined the court in 1971 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon (R). He assumed senior status on September 30, 1987.[1] McGovern's service ended on July 8, 2021, upon his death.[2]

Early life and education

A native of Seattle, Washington, McGovern graduated from the University of Washington with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and with his LL.B. in 1950.[1]

Judicial career

Western District of Washington

McGovern was nominated by President Richard Nixon on March 29, 1971, to a seat vacated by William Lindberg. McGovern was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 21, 1971, and he received his commission on April 23, 1971. McGovern served as the chief judge of the court from 1975 to 1987. He elected to take senior status beginning on September 30, 1987. He was succeeded in this position by Thomas Zilly.[1]
