John Clifford Wallace is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

Early life and education

Born in San Diego, California, Wallace received his bachelor's degree from San Diego State College in 1952, and his LL.B from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1955.[1]

Military career

Wallace served as a petty officer, second class, in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1949.[1]

Professional career

Judicial nominations and appointments

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

Wallace was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit by President Nixon on May 22, 1972, to a seat vacated by James Marshall Carter. The United States Senate confirmed Wallace's nomination on June 28, 1972, and Wallace received his commission on June 28, 1972. Wallace served as chief judge of the court from 1991 to 1996. He assumed senior status on April 8, 1996.[1] He was succeeded in this position by Kim McLane Wardlaw.

Southern District of California

Wallace was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California by President Nixon on October 7, 1970, to a new seat created by 84 Stat. 294. The United States Senate confirmed Wallace's nomination on October 13, 1970, and Wallace his received commission on October 16, 1970. Wallace resigned from the district court on July 14, 1972, upon his elevation to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Wallace was succeeded in this position by William Enright.

Awards and associations

Wallace was the 2005 recipient of the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.
