James Franklin Battin was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Montana. He was nominated by President Richard Nixon on February 20, 1969. He assumed senior status on February 13, 1990, and served in that capacity until his death on September 27, 1996.[1]

Education

Battin received an undergraduate degree from Eastern Montana College in 1948 and a J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1951.[1]

Military service

Battin served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of Montana

Battin was nominated by President Richard Nixon on February 20, 1969, to a seat vacated by Judge William Jameson. Battin was confirmed by the Senate on February 25, 1969, and received commission on February 27, 1969. From 1978 to 1990, he served as the chief judge. Battin assumed senior status on February 13, 1990. He served the District of Montana until his death on September 27, 1996.[1] Battin was succeeded in this position by Judge Jack Shanstrom.
