Stewart Albert Newblatt was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He left office on December 27, 2022, when he died.[1][2]

Early life and education

Newblatt graduated from the University of Michigan with his bachelor's degree in 1950 and later graduated from the University of Michigan Law School with his J.D. degree in 1952.[1]

Military service

Newblatt served in the US Army from 1946 to 1947.[1]

Professional career

Newblatt was a private practice attorney licensed in Michigan from 1953 to 1962 and again from 1979 to 1979. Newblatt also served as a circuit court judge in the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Michigan from 1962 to 1970.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Michigan

On the recommendation of Michigan U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Newblatt was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on May 17, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Newblatt was confirmed by the Senate on September 25, 1979, and received commission on September 26, 1979. Newblatt later assumed senior status on December 23, 1993.[1] Newblatt was succeeded in this position by Judge Paul Borman. He left office on December 27, 2022, when he died.[1]
