Dickinson Richards Debevoise was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter (D). Debevoise assumed senior status on May 1, 1994. His service ended on August 14th, 2015, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

Dickinson Debevoise was born in Orange, New Jersey. He earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College in 1948. He earned an LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1951.[1]

Military service

Debevoise served in the U.S. Army on active duty as a Sergeant from 1943 to 1945 and as a Lieutenant from 1951 to 1953.[1]

Professional career

Debevoise started out as a law clerk for former federal judge Phillip Forman in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1952 to 1953. Debevoise spent the rest of his pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of New Jersey from 1953 to 1979.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of New Jersey

Debevoise was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Debevioise was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979 and received commission on November 2, 1979. Debevoise later assumed senior status on May 1, 1994. Debevoise was succeeded in this position by Stephen Orlofsky.
