No man is a failure who has friends.

Normally this is a yearly tradition at this time of the year, yet for some ungodly reason, I skipped out on it for the past two years. Don't worry, the tradition is now back on track, and I hope to keep it that way. What a beautiful, hopeful movie. As dark as it may sound, if I had to pick a film to show someone in order to convince them that life is worth living, It's a Wonderful Life is that movie. Our lives can sometimes feel bad, and often times our negative feelings are reasonable, yet we must never forget all of the good that we have too. We have family, we have friends, and I can promise you with absolutely certainty that you have met at least one person in your life whose existence you made better. It's hard for me to think of an actor then and now that would have been more suited for George Bailey than Jimmy Stewart. He carries that special kind of whimsy in him, a man with a good brain and the heart of a child. Seeing him go through the ups and down, seeing his smile and his tears, it's all powerful. And, despite having seen this movie who knows how many times, it gets harder for me with each viewing to fight back tears during the ending. It's a Wonderful Life is a film that does rely on its sense of nostalgia and its bright-as-a-star optimism, yet it's exactly the masterpiece it's been made out to be. I'll say it again tomorrow, but I hope everyone has a merry Christmas and a happy holiday.
