"Es war mir völlig egal, ob die Kritiker "Ist das Leben nicht schön?" bejubelten oder verrissen. Ich hielt ihn für den größten Film, den ich je gemacht hatte. Er war weder für die ach so gelangweilten Kritiker noch für die ach so abgestumpften Literaten gemacht. Es war ein Film, der den Unterdrückten, den Herumgestoßenen, den Armen sagte: Kopf hoch, mein Junge! Kein Mensch, der einen Freund hat, ist wirklich arm. Drei Freunde - und du bist steinreich!"
