It’s a Wonderful Life in my eyes is a masterpiece. It’s my fourth time seeing this film since I first experienced it back durning the Christmas of 2019 but on this rewatch, which felt more needed than ever, I decided to bump my score to an 100% and add it to my list of all time favorites. I’m a believer that no film is entirely perfect or without even the smallest flaw and admittedly this one has some minor issues but for the most part this film presents nothing but outstanding aspects. The authenticity, rough poignancy, and maturity that surrounds this engrossing tale provokes an array of deeply human emotions amongst the viewer which at least to me no other film can quite come close to capturing so masterfully well. Think of some of your favorite films, naturally most of them should be distinguishable from each other in one way or another but one thing I can almost guarantee is a similar feat with all of them for you is that a majority of details and the general sequence of scenes are engraved in your mind.
For me this ability to remember and recognize even the smallest details of films that mean a lot to me especially shines through classic films I consider all time favorites. I’d say the main step that led me to finally listing this film as one of my all time favorites was that realization of much I connected with it and almost unknowingly memorized even the most minor features. Out of all of the phenomenal aspects that make up this film Jimmy Stewart’s performances continues to be what I consider it’s best part. He gives one of the greatest performances to ever grace the silver screen that he should have easily walked away with an Oscar for. I know I’ve mentioned a few times before and it’s a widely popular opinion but this film should have won all five Oscars it was nominated for and more. I’ve seen the film that beat it for most of the awards it was up for, Wyler’s The Best Years of Our Lives, and while that film is great it’s nowhere near as remarkable as this timeless classic. Overall It’s a Wonderful Life is an exceptionally well made film that by the quite literally perfect ending always leaves me reminded that life is truly wonderful.
