Christmas 2021
One of the purest movies ever made. It's a movie that I've loved since day one. It seems to be a trend of my recent viewing that I'm seeing films about which my viewpoint has changed over the years, not the case with this one. It's A Wonderful Life’s irresistible charm oozes out of every frame from the first scene with the flashbacks to George's childhood to the very final shot. I loved it from the start.
George Bailey is the epitome of 'good'. The man who "never thinks about himself". James Stewart is the perfect actor for the role, rarely in the history of film has there been a better marriage of actor and character. The first scenes involving Stewart are lighthearted yet character driven. We get to know George from an endearing, comedic perspective. Let's not underestimate just how funny this movie is. Especially in that first 45 minutes or so. However, and importantly, it doesn't shy away from the harsh reality. It's not long before Bailey's life becomes a lot less than wonderful. By the time he reaches the end of his tether we don't just know the character, we have grown incredibly fond of him. Perhaps the purest, noblest, most selfless character in all of cinema. The epitome of good, by the end of the movie he feels like an old friend.
It's a film that restores your faith in humanity.
