People remember this movie as a happy, corny, overly sentimental Christmas family movie. But it's really dark. It's about broken dreams, altruism being faced with greed and cruelty, and how a man can be pushed too far. But having a solid moral center and always doing the honorable thing will have its rewards. I was a bawling mess the whole time, but it's such a beautiful film. Both visually and thematically. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed are a perfect match. My favorite part is when they watch their millionaire friend Sam drive off then walk to their own broken down car.
