One of the ultimate pillars of American cinema - a film righteously driven by both its working-class ethos and its devout belief in the totality of the American dream.
Capra's empathy here is absurd. This is one of the most compelling depictions of depression I've seen from classic Hollywood, made all the more so by how the melodrama of its fantasy premise elevates the emotional register of the movie to the stratosphere.
That It's a Wonderful Life reclaimed it's place in the pantheon of history is a testament to the perfection at the core of this movie - and to its ability to express its absolute conviction in the value of human existence.
