When George’s younger brother plunges head first into an icy pool of swirling water, the idea of self-preservation is as foreign as the adventure he so knowingly craves. Throughout his story, Selfless George saves the day again and again, even though it’s at the expense of his own. And indeed, this notion for unintended heroics becomes a reoccurring pattern, even at the point of death. Which, in my opinion, is this film’s true brilliance. At his lowest, George trades his own safety for another’s. Thus, flipping the narrative, and saving himself.
