It´s easy to see why “It´s a Wonderful Life” is both Frank Capra´s and Jimmy Stewart´s favorite movie of their respective filmographies, since it shows both of them at the top of their game. It´s a life-affirming masterpiece that oozes warmth, humanity, and joy of life, and captures the Christmas spirit probably better than any other film.
George Bailey is one of the most loveable and inspiring movie characters of all time and the emotional investment in his fate is incredibly high. The supporting characters are memorable, as well, and Bedford Falls feels like a lived-in town with its own distinct personality. But the film doesn´t just live from heart and charm alone, it also features Capra´s impeccable craftmanship and an innovative concept and story structure that still feel fresh.
The most fascinating thing about “It´s a Wonderful Life” is that we all remember it as a delightful, happy movie, although much of its content is actually bleak and depressing. We see how cruel and unfair life can be and how often bad things happen to good people. Yet what we get out of this film is that experiencing the lows of life only makes you appreciate the highs even more. The last act is simply beautiful and results in one of the most uplifting and joyful endings of movie history.
“It´s a Wonderful Life” is the kind of film that can change your whole perspective on life. All of us matter, even when we don´t see it. This movie is a timeless ode to compassion, kindness, and community that always makes me feel a bit better about humanity, and for that reason, it deserves its reputation as one of the all-time greats.
