In a sense, this almost plays like an inverted “A Christmas Carol,” but instead of specters visiting a miser who has everything, an angel visits a pillar of goodness who has lost it all. Capra must’ve thought: “what if we told the story through Bob Cratchett’s point of view?”
It never fails to amaze me how confidently and considerably told the story is — the ending alone hits so hard because every character is so nakedly real and human, even the ones on the periphery.
That sense of community is something Capra so earnestly sought to realize in celluloid and in life, and this movie will forever remain a pristine testament to that idea. We’re at our best when we lift one another up.
