Robert Lee Russell (1900-1955) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.[1]

Early life and education

Professional career

  • Private practice, Atlanta, Georgia, 1920-1923
  • Secretary to chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, 1923-1929
  • Private practice, Winder, Georgia, 1929-1940[1]

Judicial career

Fifth Circuit

Russell was nominated to the Fifth Circuit by President Harry Truman on October 15, 1949, to a seat vacated by Samuel Hale Sibley; he was confirmed by the Senate on October 19, 1949, and received commission October 21. He served until his death on January 18, 1955.[1]

Northern District of Georgia

Russell was nominated to the Northern District of Georgia by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on August 5, 1940, to a new seat created by 54 Stat. 219; he was confirmed by the Senate on August 8, 1940, and received commission on August 15, 1940. He served as chief judge for a brief stint during 1949, until October 26, 1949, when he was confirmed to a different court.[1] Russell was succeeded in this position by Frank Hooper.
