John Joseph Smith (1904-1980) was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut and the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. He joined the Second Circuit in 1960 after an appointment from Dwight Eisenhower. He joined the District of Connecticut in 1941 after an appointment from Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He served as chief judge of the district court from 1953 - 1960. At the time of his appointment, he was a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. He assumed senior status on November 6, 1971 and served until his death on February 16, 1980.[1]

Judicial career

Second Circuit

Smith was nominated to the Second Circuit by President Dwight Eisenhower on January 11, 1960, to a seat vacated by Carroll Clark Hincks; he was confirmed by the Senate on September 1, 1960, and received commission September 2nd. He assumed senior status on November 6, 1971. He served the Second Circuit until his death on February 16, 1980.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Thomas Meskill.

District of Connecticut

Smith was nominated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on October 16, 1941, to a seat vacated by Edwin Stark Thomas; he was confirmed by the Senate on October 28, 1941, and received commission on October 30, 1941. From 1953-1960, he served as the chief judge. He served the District of Connecticut until he was elevated to the Second Circuit on September 13, 1960.[1] He was succeeded to this post by William Timbers.
