Luther Merritt Swygert (1905-1988) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.[1]

Judicial career
Northern District of Indiana
Swygert was nominated to the Northern District of Indiana by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on September 29, 1943, to a seat vacated by Thomas W. Slick; he was confirmed by the Senate on October 14, 1943, and received commission on October 16, 1943. From 1954-1961, he served as the chief judge. He served the Northern District of Indiana until he was elevated to the Seventh Circuit on October 10, 1961.[1] Swygert was succeeded in this position by Jesse Eschbach.
Seventh Circuit
Swygert was nominated to the Seventh Circuit by President John F. Kennedy on September 18, 1961, to a new seat created by 75 Stat. 80; he was confirmed by the Senate on September 23, 1961, and received commission on September 29, 1961. From 1970-1975, he served as the chief judge. He assumed senior status on July 1, 1981. He served the Seventh Circuit until his death on March 16, 1988.[1]
