W. Eugene Davis is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. He joined the court in 1983 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Winfield, Alabama, Davis graduated from Tulane Law School with his J.D. in 1960.[1]

Davis was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President Ronald Reagan on November 1, 1983, to a seat vacated by Judge Robert Ainsworth. Hearings on Davis' nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on November 7, 1983, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on November 10, 1983. Davis was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on November 15, 1983, and he received his commission the next day. Davis elected to take senior status beginning December 31, 2016.[1][2]

Western District of Louisiana

Davis was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana by President Gerald Ford on August 5, 1976, to a seat vacated by Judge Richard Putnam. Davis was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 17, 1976, and he received commission on September 21, 1976. Davis resigned from the district court on December 9, 1983, upon his elevation to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] He was succeeded in this position by Judge John Duhe.
