Jane Richards Roth is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. She joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Roth graduated from Smith College with her bachelor's degree in 1956 and from Harvard Law School with her LL.B. in 1965.[1]

Roth was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on May 16, 1991, to a seat vacated by Collins Seitz. The American Bar Association rated Roth Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Roth's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on June 20, 1991, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 27, 1991. Roth was confirmed on the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on June 28, 1991, and she received her commission on July 2, 1991. Roth assumed senior status on May 31, 2006.[1][3] She was succeeded in this position by Judge Kent Jordan.
District of Delaware
Roth was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Delaware by President Ronald Reagan on October 16, 1985, to a seat vacated by Walter Stapleton as Stapleton was elevated to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Hearings on Roth's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 30, 1985, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) the next day. Roth was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on November 1, 1985, and she received her commission on November 4, 1985. Roth resigned from the district court on July 22, 1991, upon her elevation to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][4] She was succeeded in this position by Judge Sue Robinson.
