Curtis Joyner was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). Joyner assumed the position of chief judge in June 2011. He transitioned to senior status in 2013 and retired in 2021.[1][2]

Early life and education

Born in Newberry, South Carolina, Joyner graduated from Central State University of Ohio with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and later graduated from the Howard University School of Law in 1974. Joyner completed coursework at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada at Reno.[2]

Professional career

Joyner was a legal publications specialist for the United States Office of the Federal Register in Washington, D.C. from 1974 to 1975 before entering private practice in the State of Pennsylvania until 1987. Joyner was an assistant district attorney for Chester County, Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1980 and also served as the chief deputy district attorney for Chester County, Pennsylvania, until 1984 and as its first assistant district attorney from until 1987. Joyner was a judge for the Chester County Court of Common Pleas, Pennsylvania until 1992.[2]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

On the recommendation of Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, Joyner was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by President George W. Bush (R) on November 5, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089, which was approved by Congress. Joyner was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 8, 1992, on a voice vote and received commission on April 13, 1992.[3] On May 1, 2013, Judge Curtis Joyner assumed senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where he had served for over 20 years.[4] He retired on September 15, 2021.[2]
