Jack Shanstrom was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Montana. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). Shanstrom served on senior status from 2001 to 2019, when he fully retired. He died on January 13, 2020.[1][2]
Early life and education
Shanstrom graduated from the University of Montana with two bachelor's degrees in 1956 and 1957 and with a J.D. in 1957.[1]
Military service
Shanstrom also served as a U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant in the JAG Corps from 1957 to 1960.[1]
Professional career
From 1960 to 1964, Shanstrom began his career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Montana from 1960 to 1964. In addition to his private practice, Shanstrom also served as a part-time assistant city attorney for the City of Livingston, Montana in 1960. Shanstrom also served as a part-time county attorney for Park County from 1960 to 1965. From 1965 to 1982, Shanstrom was a judge on the Montana 6th Judicial District Court.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
District of Montana
Shanstrom began his federal judicial career as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Montana in 1983. Shanstrom served in his capacity until he became an Article III judge in 1990.[1]
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Conrad Burns, Shanstrom was nominated by President George Bush on February 23, 1990, to a seat vacated by Judge James Battin as Battin assumed senior status. Shanstrom was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 11, 1990, and received commission on May 14, 1990.[3] Shanstrom served as the chief judge of the court from 1996 to 2001 before later assuming senior status on January 30, 2001. Shanstrom was succeeded in this position by Judge Richard Cebull. Shanstrom fully retired in 2019.
