Henry Coke Morgan Jr. was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. His service ended on May 1, 2022, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Morgan graduated from Washington and Lee University with his bachelor's degree in 1957 and from the Washington and Lee University School of Law with his J.D. in 1960.[1]

Military service

Morgan served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1958 to 1959.[1]

Morgan was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President George H.W. Bush on October 22, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. The American Bar Association rated Morgan Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Morgan's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 1, 1992, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on April 8, 1992. Morgan was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on April 8, 1992, and he received his commission the same day. Morgan elected to take senior status beginning on February 8, 2004. He was succeeded in this position by Walter Kelley.[1][2][3]
