Maurice Mitchell Paul was a federal judge who served on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. He first joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He elected to take senior status on July 31, 1997, and he served as a senior judge until his death on December 29, 2016.[1][2]

Early life and education

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Paul graduated from the University of Florida with his bachelor's degree in 1954 and from the University of Florida College of Law with his LL.B. in 1960.[1]

Military service

Paul served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957.[1]

Paul was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on April 26, 1982, to a seat vacated by Winston Arnow. Hearings on Paul's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on May 26, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on June 16, 1982. Paul was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on June 18, 1982, and he received his commission on June 21, 1982. From 1993 to 1997, Paul served as chief judge of the district court. He elected to take senior status on July 31, 1997, and served as a senior judge until his death on December 29, 2016.[1][2][3] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Stephan Mickle.
