Kenneth L. Ryskamp was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He elected to take senior status beginning on January 1, 2000, and served as a senior judge until his death on November 16, 2017.[1][2]

Early life and education

A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ryskamp graduated from Calvin College with his bachelor's degree in 1955 and from the University of Miami School of Law with his J.D. in 1956.[1]

Ryskamp was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on March 12, 1986, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida vacated by Joseph Eaton. Hearings on Ryskamp's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 9, 1986, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on April 17, 1986. Ryskamp was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on April 23, 1986, and he received his commission the next day. Ryskamp elected to take senior status beginning on January 1, 2000, and he served as senior judge until his death on November 16, 2017. Ryskamp was succeeded in this position by Judge Paul Huck.[1][3]

Eleventh Circuit nomination

Ryskamp was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit vacated by Paul Roney. Hearings on Ryskamp's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 19-20, 1991, but the committee voted not to report Ryskamp's nomination to the full Senate for final confirmation.[4][5]
