Joseph Whitaker Thompson (1861-1946) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.

He was nominated by President Herbert Hoover on December 4, 1930 to fill the seat vacated by John Bayard McPherson. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 22, 1931, and received commission on January 29th. On May 1, 1938, he assumed senior status. He served until his death on January 7, 1946.[1] Thompson was succeeded in this position by George Austin Welsh.

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

Thompson was previously a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

He was nominated by President William Howard Taft on June 5, 1912 to fill the seat vacated by John Bayard McPherson. He was confirmed by the Senate on June 16, 1912, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until February 3, 1931.
