Jean Constance Hamilton is an Article III federal judge serving on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. She joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Prior to her of her nomination, she was a judge for the Missouri Court of Appeals. She assumed senior status in July of 2013.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Missouri, early in her life she announced that she was dropping out of kindergarten, but her mind was soon changed by mother, Rosemary Hamilton. Jean Hamilton graduated from Wellesley College with her bachelor's degree in 1968 and earned her J.D. from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis in 1971 before later earning a Master of Laws degree from Yale Law School in 1982.[1]
Professional career
After law school, Hamilton became an staff attorney handling civil rights cases in the United States Department of Justice in Washington, DC from 1971 to 1973. In 1973, Hamilton moved back to Missouri to join the US Attorney's Office as a Assistant US Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri from 1973 to 1978 then in 1978, Hamilton left the US Attorney's Office in Missouri to become Corporate Legal Counsel for the former Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in St. Louis which is now AT&T from 1978 to 1981. In 1982, Hamilton was appointed a circuit court judge under the Missouri Plan in Missouri's Twenty-second Judicial Circuit of Missouri from 1982 to 1988 then again in 1988, Hamilton was appointed a state appeals judge for the Missouri Court of Appeals serving the Eastern District from 1988 to 1990. Hamilton has also served as a part-time faculty member at St. Louis University Law School from 1986 to 1987 and in 1989 and at Washington University-St. Louis School of Law from 1987 to 1992.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Eastern District of Missouri
On the unanimous recommendation of Senators John Danforth and Christopher Bond, Hamilton was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on August 3, 1990, to a seat vacated by John Nangle as Nagle went on senior status. Hamilton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 28, 1990, on a Senate vote and received commission on October 1, 1990. Hamilton served as the Chief Judge of the Court from 1995 to 2002. More recently Hamilton has received the Woman of the Year award from the St. Louis Daily Record, a local law publication.[1] On July 1, 2013, Judge Jean Hamilton assumed senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, where she had served for over 12 years.[2]
