Harvey Bartle III is a judge on senior status for United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush and served as chief judge from 2006-2011. He assumed senior status on October 1, 2011.
Early life and education
A native of Pennsylvania, Bartle graduated from Princeton University with his bachelor's degree in 1962 and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with his Law degree in 1965. Bartle also served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Captain from 1966 to 1972.[1]
Professional career
Judge Bartle became a Law Clerk for federal judge John Davis (Pennsylvania) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1967. Bartle spent a majority of his legal career as a private practice licensed in the State of Pennsylvania from 1967 to 1979 and from 1981 to 1991. Bartle also served as a State insurance commissioner for the State of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1980 and was appointed by Governor Dick Thornburgh for the State attorney general of the State of Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1981.
Judicial career
Eastern District of Pennsylvania
On the recommendation of Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz III, Bartle was nominated by President George Bush on May 15, 1991 to a seat vacated by Joseph McGlynn, Jr. as McGlynn assumed senior status. Bartle was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 12, 1991 on a senate vote and received commission on September 16, 1991. Bartle served as the chief judge of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2011. He assumed senior status on October 1, 2011.
