Michael Martin Mihm is an federal judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Mihm assumed senior status on October 1, 2009.

Early life and education

Born in Amboy, Illinois, Mihm graduated from Loras College in Duboque, Iowa with his bachelor's degree in 1964 and from Saint Louis University Law School in St. Louis, Missouri with his Juris Doctor degree in 1967.

Professional career

Mihm was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for St. Louis County, Missouri from 1967 to 1968 before serving as an Assistant State's Attorney for Peoria County, Illinois from 1968 to 1969. Mihm was Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Peoria, Illinois from 1969 to 1972. Mihm was State's Attorney of Illinois from 1972 to 1980 before entering private practice until 1982.

Judicial career

Central District of Illinois

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Charles Percy, Mihm was nominated to the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois by President Ronald Reagan on July 27, 1982, to a judgeship vacated by Robert Morgan. Mihm was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 5, 1982, on a Senate Vote and received commission on August 6, 1982. Mihm served as Chief Judge for the court from 1991 to 1998. He assumed senior status on October 1, 2009.

Judge Mihm sentenced Al Qaida sleeper agent and former Bradley University student Ali al-Marri to eight and a half years in prison on October 29, 2009. Marri was convicted for his role to conspire in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and was known to be in terrorist training camps in the Middle East.

Despite the fact that Marri spent five years in military prison, Mihm handed down the sentence because he considered Marri a threat to society and national security.
