Joseph Francis Weis, Jr. was a federal appeals judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit based in Philadelphia. Weis served on senior status until his death on March 19, 2014.[1][2]

Education

Weis graduated from Duquesne University with his bachelor's degree in 1947 and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with his J.D. in 1950.[1]

Military service

Weis also served as a U.S. Army Captain on active duty from 1943 to 1948.[1]

Professional career

Weis was a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Pennsylvania from 1950 to 1968 before becoming a judge in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County from 1968 to 1970. Weis also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.[1]

Judicial career

Third Circuit Court of Appeals

On the unanimous recommendation of Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Hugh Scott, Jr. and Richard Schweiker, Weis was nominated by President Richard Nixon on February 13, 1973, to a seat vacated by Judge Abraham Freedman as Freedman died while in judicial service.[1] Weis was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 14, 1973, and received commission on March 15, 1973. Weis later assumed senior status on April 1, 1988. He passed away on March 19, 2014.[1]

Western District of Pennsylvania

On the unanimous recommendation of Pennsylvania U.S. Senators Hugh Scott, Jr. and Richard Schweiker, Weis was nominated by President Richard Nixon on March 11, 1970, to a seat vacated by Judge Joseph P. Willson. Weis was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 23, 1970, and received commission on April 24, 1970. Weis left the Western District of Pennsylvania on March 27, 1973, due to his elevation to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Weis was succeeded in this position by Judge Daniel Snyder.[1]
