Roger Gordon Strand was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Strand served as a senior federal judge from April 28, 2000, until his death on September 7, 2017.[1]

Early life and education

A native of New York, Strand graduated from Hamilton College with his bachelor's degree in 1955 and from Cornell Law School with his Law degree in 1961. He took graduate courses at the National College of State Trial Judges in 1968.[1]

Military service

Strand served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958 and in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1958 to 1961. He was discharged from military service with the rank of first lieutenant.[1]

Strand was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on June 25, 1985, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Arizona vacated by Charles Muecke. Hearings on Strand's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 17, 1985, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on July 18, 1985. Strand was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on July 19, 1985, and he received his commission on July 22, 1985. Strand served as a senior federal judge from April 28, 2000, until his death on September 7, 2017. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Frederick Martone.[1][2]
