John Rainey is an Article III Federal Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He joined the Court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Rainey assumed senior status on June 11, 2010.

Early life and education

Born in Freeport, Texas, Rainey graduated from Southern Methodist University with his bachelor's in Business Administration degree in 1967 and later received a Juris Doctor degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1972. Rainey also served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1970.[1]

Professional career

Rainey was a private practice attorney in the State of Texas from 1973 to 1986. Rainey served as the Director of the Angleton, Texas Chamber of Commerce from 1983 to 1987 before serving as District Court Judge in the 149th District Court of Texas in Brazoria County, Texas until 1990.[1]

Judicial career

Southern District of Texas

On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Rainey was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas by President George H.W. Bush on January 24, 1990 to a seat vacated by Gabrielle McDonald as McDonald assumed senior status. Rainey was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 11, 1990 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 14, 1990.[2]
