“Hail Satan.”
Unsettling but not scary. Longlegs, written and directed by Oz Perkins, is another victim of the hype machine for me, as I was expecting something that would hit Hereditary levels of scares, but no such luck. That said, this film has much to offer such as disturbing imagery, a great Nicholas Cage performance and a solid score.
Without a doubt, the best thing about this film is its horrific imagery. I’m not too sure how I felt in between the horror bits (wasn’t a big fan of Maika Monroe’s character) but in the *moment*, I was captivated. I can see how people could find this film disturbing, the flashbacks are great, the nonchalance of the murders is chilling and Nicholas Cage is so creepy looking that I’d run the other way if I saw him on the street.
Speaking of Nicholas Cage, this is an interesting role for him. I thought it was funny that he still managed to Nic Cage it even though the only thing that was recognizable about him was his voice. Longlegs does some singing throughout and there’s a glimmer of the Cage we all know and love. That was fun but he plays a creepy, creepy guy and plays it well. Monroe is also good even if I found her character way too passive throughout. I’m happy to see her get a role that’ll put her in the spotlight though, she’s a talented actress.
Oh and there is one thing that is scary, and that’s the black hooded figure that shows up throughout. Reminded me of The Nun from The Conjuring 2.
Overall, I thought this was good but a bit overhyped. Still, one of the better horror films this year.
Edit: Went up a half star on a rewatch. Still not crazy about Monroe’s character but the imagery, creepy symmetrical framing and Cage’s fantastic performance are all great.
