Perhaps my expectations were too high. I had heard "Longlegs" was in the same league as "The Silence of the Lambs" (it's not). One person (on X aka Twitter of course) even brought up Oscar nominations. It's a solid flick and certainly the most interesting horror film of the year. It's unfair to compare it, to what for me, is one of my all-time favorite films.
As usual I found Maika Monroe to be an excellent screen presence. Nicholas Cage creates a new horror icon, almost vanishing into the role. Only occasionally does his persona pop out. Supporting players Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt are excellent as well. It's been a while since I've seen either of them.
Loved the atmosphere and some of the directing choices but I'm not sure how I feel about where the story goes. The best part was how original it felt until it wasn't. For a good hour I had no idea where it was going. It loses some luster once its cards are revealed. A second watch should clarify if this is a new horror classic or just a pretty good one that's fallen victim to social media overhype. More likely it's somewhere in between. I'm excited to see it again so that alone makes it a recommend.
