My second viewing of this had me liking it a lot more. I think I brought in a lot of expectations about what I thought it was and was let down when that’s what it wasn’t. I’m a lot closer to seeing it as a 4 star flick now. Blair Underwood, who I liked most on my first viewing is just great. “You don’t drink, you’re right. I’ll drink while you tell me things, Agent Harker.” The choice of music is excellent. That opening song by T-Rex is the perfect level of creeptastic. The use of the name Harker is another detail I love because it conjures a connection to Jonathan Harker from Dracula who is strangely connected to the Count, part victim and part vampire hunter. Agent Harker has a similar connection to the Big Bad, here. I love the scene when Harker meets her boss’ kid and visits her bedroom and notices the headless dance trophy. There’s something vaguely ghastly about it. And the mention of veal calves is also horrific. “Even veals grow a little and they live in a box with their legs all tied up and everything.” “Veals have it pretty tough, don’t they.” I think on my initial viewing I was disappointed in the connection the story had to the preternatural. I was expecting an investigation thriller. But expectations are preconceived resentments. The other very cool thing is that I’ve since watched the 2 previous films by Osgood Perkins and wow, Longlegs is far superior to those imo so it’s always great seeing a director who is improving and really finding their, ahem, legs.
