"Who is the man downstairs?"
Longlegs has been receiving a lot buzz lately, leaving me highly anticipated for the film. I’m pleased to say that it didn’t disappoint!
From the start, this film had me feeling very uneasy. We get a quick glimpse of "Longlegs" during the cold open, which ultimately ends up being an important scene that plays into later events. Following scenes such as the incident with "Lee Harker’s" FBI partner, the eerie events she experiences while home alone, along with her interview with Longlegs are all examples of this film’s continuous exhilarating moments.
Maika Monroe steals the show in her performance. For essentially the entire duration of the film, it’s apparent that her character is clearly distressed from past and present situations. This is represented through her facial/physical expressions portrayed throughout the film. When Monroe’s character was breathing heavily to the point to where it sounded like she was having a panic attack, her performance sold me. Nick Cage was also outstanding, and creepy as hell as the satanic maniac he played. The cosmetic oddities of this character played into his creepiness. And when he got into his rants, they were lowkey giving a punk rockstar-esque vibe. The whole character was intriguing, and Cage put his everything into it.
My main issues were in the third act of the film, as I thought the first two were pretty perfect. When the film began walking the line of being a true crime vs. a supernatural film, it started to lose me. Ending a good movie can be tricky, and that was the case here.
This film really sold that gloomy and eerie vibe that Oregon can give.
