Something about Satanism in a suburban setting is one of those ultimate horror tropes you can only touch once in awhile because of how well it works. I think it works so well because of how well we view suburban areas. We think of them as safe, quiet, removed places, but that's also why they gotta be some of the darkest, most horrible places on earth. And Longlegs solidifies it.
First off, it has to be said, Nicholas Cage is a muh'fuckin ACTOR. It truly doesn't matter the kind of film he's in. Whether it's low-budget indie or big studio fare, this man brings it to every single one of his performances. He just has a massive talent (😉) for knowing his characters inside and out and can take them to places you wouldn't think they'd even go.
This is true for Longlegs as well. He's so deliciously weird, so intentionally haunting, and so passionately evil that he makes your skin crawl, and the film does a great job of helping in that department as well. There are moments where the sound cuts out completely. It's not even atmosphere, it's just silence, and the tension you can fill in that space engulfs you.
Maika Monroe and Blair Underwood are damn good as detectives trying to unravel the case, and the 3rd act climax is a frightening journey through the depths of hell that has to be experienced, so it can haunt your dreams for the next few months as well.
This is a great way to do horror, but keep it to just a few every few years. Oversaturation of the genre could kill it and I want it around for a long time.
