Longlegs

Longlegs

Longlegs is a calculated, unrelentingly creepy-crawly, frigid dread machine of a film.

Previous post-theatrical watch reviews for my (still) #1 favorite horror flick of the year and the best film from Oz Perkins by (imo) a countless country miles are here and here.

Four random thoughts after this third viewing:

⸸ This is a deceptively diabolical (albeit brilliant) depiction of the ever-ravaging mental, emotional, relational, spiritual, and spatial/physical toll this specific form of “cuckooing” has on its victims. Brood parasitism exploitation in service of a satanic design is a mf. 🐦‍⬛👹

▽ When Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) undergoes the FBI’s word association portion of the “psychic test,” upon viewing the inverted triangle, Lee instinctively says, “Father.” 👀

⁶⁶⁶ Pay attention! Peep the scene where a group of officers are in a meeting room watching the previously taped Longlegs interrogation. Before he starts to sing happy birthday to Harker, Longlegs ominously states that he'll see her real soon, adding, “...and you'll be there, and you'll be there” while specifically turning his head and nodding in the direction of where Lee, Agent Carter, and Agent Browning are situated in the room–as if he can see them, as if he knew where they'd be standing in that exact moment–foreshadowing the involvement of all three in the imminent events to come. 🤯

⛧ The arc of “The Accomplice” is as twistedly harrowing and heartbreaking as it is underappreciated given that their coerced commitment to their reluctant role in the occultic serial killings is rooted in selfless sacrifice for the sake of another.

They go from being a deeply religious nurse who prays for the vulnerable to a deeply disturbed emissary (“False Prophet”) of Satan (“The Beast”) who preys on the vulnerable at the behest of Longlegs (“The Antichrist”). To become hollowed out, stripped of relevant autonomy, gradually siphoned of humanity, and fashioned as a pawn, as a living tool of evil…words can't describe such a wretched existence. Goddamn. 😮‍💨
